That would be a lot more believable if the government doesn't say one thing and does another thing. The "Do As I Say, Not As I Do" approach never convinces anyone, right? The government does issue masks to its airport employees, including TSA agents. Tell me, is this because the government believes that TSA agents are more likely to spread the disease to passengers?

A mask works, and it's not necessarily related to its virus filtering power. First of all, it immediately warns people about approaching you. It keeps other people away from you, because it sends a message: "I want you to stay at a safe distance from me." Secondly, it prevents any causal landing of droplets, even if other people are away from you. And most importantly, read this message from James Robb: https://slippedisc.com/2020/03/some-expert-advice-on-coronavirus/. A mask prevents you from touching your own nose and mouth.

2) Stock up now with disposable surgical masks and use them to prevent you from touching your nose and/or mouth (We touch our nose/mouth 90X/day without knowing it!). This is the only way this virus can infect you – it is lung-specific. The mask will not prevent the virus in a direct sneeze from getting into your nose or mouth – it is only to keep you from touching your nose or mouth.

James Robb, MD FCAP, was a professor of pathology at the University of California San Diego and one of the first molecular virologists in the world to work on coronaviruses (the 1970s).

I haven't seen a bottle of hand sanitizer in the shops since new year.

Flour, sugar, rice, pasta, long life products that can be stored are sold out. Toilet paper flying off the shelves,.

I doubt what's posted on this forum is creating this panic. It's well and truly began already.

There is now discussion in Australia that quarantine zones will be created and that people confirmed to have the virus will be enforced to stay home for a minimum of 14 days (which effectively means the entire family will be quarantined for that period).

It's much more productive to acknowledge your shortcomings. Because the first step towards solving a problem, is by acknowledging that the problem exists. Embarrassment doesn't kill anyone. Hiding facts does.

Did anyone mention the Dean Koontz novel here yet?

Not panicking here I just like to be informed is all. People should have all the info so they can make the right choice for them and their family. I was already prepared with supplies because I live in area prone to Hurricanes so it pays to already have supplies ahead of time for that simple reason

Very interesting. That's the best explanation I've read about why to use them. :) However I hate wearing stuff on my face, or things attached to my ears etc, and also the dampness/moisture that builds up inside them. So I probably won't be buying any, even if there were still any in the shops. At least I don't go out much at the moment ...

... but I believe that we're all going to be exposed to it eventually, and probably before there's a vaccine ... and I have been beginning to feel a bit stressed/anxious about it. :?

The strategy I'm pinning my hopes on is simply resilience, the scientific observation that the effect of a virus depends on the "soil" it lands in, ie the state of the body it infects/tries to infect, as can be seen in the death figures showing that older people and/or people with other already existing illnesses and reduced immune system function are most likely to experience severe illness and/or death.

For me this means a few essential things; no sugar and very little starchy or refined carbohydrates or processed foods; plenty of oily fish ( eg tinned tuna, mackerel, sardines, anchovies ); nuts and seeds and lots of fresh green leafy vegetables/salad eg lashings of parsley; a daily dose of sunshine/daylight, and at least 8 hours of sleep a night ( not been getting that recently though :( ). I do know that exercise would be good too!

Also heating/"hot" herb teas like ginger, ( including fresh raw grated/chopped ), and cinnamon, plus fresh garlic in salads etc. This virus is one of the family of coronaviruses which are also responsible for the common cold, so I figure that what works for them ( in my experience anyway, both as a preventative and curatively ), may help with this one even if it is more serious.

I gather that washing hands thoroughly and fairly frequently but definitely immediately on returning home/to one's "safe space" is supposed to be a good idea. But although I get that and plan to do it every time after been out, it's still not a resilience measure. ... some more physical activity, preferably aerobic, would be good ... hmmmm lol! :) ... ... .... and they do say laughter helps; it boosts the immune system! :) ....

Quick, reread some P G Wodehouse, rewatch Clockwise, Groundhog Day, Spy, etc etc etc! :)

PS. I am feeling very sorry for people who have all those very mobile, and very public-facing roles who also tend to be self-employed/paid by the job, like delivery drivers and couriers, careworkers, cleaners, taxi drivers, etc for whom the recommended 14 days of self-isolation in suspected case of coronavirus, or taking time off for actual illness, means total loss of earnings without sick pay ...

... A recent survey of gig economy workers in the UK showed that most of them would not take time off unless completely incapacitated ... :?

They are apparently already massively under pressure, pissing in bottles in their vans/cars to save precious time between deliveries, client visits, pick-ups etc, and eating nearly nothing but snack bars/junk food all day long, getting insufficient sleep, etc but they will be exposed to fresh sets of viruses at every job ... and they'll know that they're almost certainly contributing to the spread of the coronavirus. :(

I'm stocking up. It is prudent. How is that panicking?
There is no in-depth infection where I live, but according to the experts, while it won't happen overnight, it will happen and will be part of our lives, as is influenza.

Pretend the danger doesn't exist or prepare for the changing social paradigm. I know which way I lean.
Kissing and handshaking in greeting someone might be a thing of the past. I don't have a problem with stopping that sort of NT nonsense in any case.

Stores are out of water and toilet paper because people stocked up in case there was a shortage, thus causing a shortage.

I disagree. I think this thread is very helpful. For the most part, the information is reliable and answers people's questions; it also includes information for preparation. People should be alarmed about this, and should prepare, because this is a bad situation.

I'm not alarmed, but I am preparing. They are talking about 12 months before a generic anti-virus. The trick is to dodge it until then.

BTW, I think the virus was engineered by ageist young people, to cull the baby boomers who caused climate change. Joke.

Where I live, there is no obvious hoarding, apart from water-free hand sanitisers.

And the British government is advising people to "carry on as normal", but they are also expecting, asking, and even forcing people, to "self isolate for 14 days" at a moment's notice, and we have seen quarantine periods extended at least once for some groups of people ... so stocking up is really a very sensible thing to do, enabling people to self-isolate completely as requested ... Supermarkets are in fact organising to support this: https://www.theguardian.com/business/20 ... nic-buying

But many of the instructions are in fact contradictory, about many aspects of the coronavirus preparations, and this is going to be particularly difficult for people on the Autism Spectrum, with impaired executive functioning, me anyway ;) who already struggle with fuzzy grey areas and unspoken/reading between the lines interpretations and multiple-task prioritisation, for whom even the normal state of world is already mind bogglingly illogical and messy.

I am so far half anaesthetising myself against some of this anxiety inducing increase in idiocies, inconsistencies and incompetencies by seeing it as a logical result of the mixed motives and priorities of governments/leaderships, ie that they are either not sure who or what they should be protecting most, or they know very well who or what they want to protect but have to pretend to care about everybody ... as I said in my very first post on this thread.

Grim but at least comprehensible.

I live in California (earthquake country). Stocking up is normal. Panic is when one person buys up all the toilet paper and bottled water in one store, fills their cabinets with cold remedies, and won't show up to work unless everyone wears a mask. My neighbor was sent home from work because he sneezed three times in a row (allergic to certain perfumes). Even the panhandlers are keeping their distance.
