They come with little salt packets to add.The reason for sterile water is some people got brain eating amoebas from using non-sterile water.

I escaped "old folks" quarantine yesterday. I went to the grocery store, the post office, Diary Queen and had a hot fudge sunday, then to the drug store. [I was out-and-about with my N95 and hand sanitizing hand gel.] What I am seeing now is fewer people wearing masks. It might be burn-out. There is only so long that a person can sustain a panic mode and then they reset. We have had a high number of COVID-19 deaths in our county recently, but almost all of them are from nursing homes. Almost all nursing homes are hot spots.

I guess Argentina is taking the lockdown of the elderly very seriously. If you are old and leave you home and walk down the streets, they arrest you and escort you back to your home.

NETI POT

I have reviewed articles on the Internet with the words "Neti pot" and "coronavirus". I wonder it there might be a solution other than a saline solution that would be more effective to use against the coronavirus. This is what I found:
---------------------------------------------------
Nasal irrigation with Neti pots and saline sprays are great options to have on-hand from common colds to more advanced conditions. Nasal irrigation is also extremely helpful in treating upper respiratory conditions to help clear breathing passages, remove environmental pollutants and ease inflammation.
----------------------------------------------------
I came across a site called "12 Myths About Coronavirus, According to the World Health Organization". In general, the World Health Organization (WHO) has been so wrong about this pandemic that I view anything they say with extreme caution. IMHO they are running a disinformation campaign. So this is what they said, "Myth #8: Regularly rinsing your nose with saline can help prevent infection with the new coronavirus
While regularly rinsing your nose with saline may help you recover more quickly from the common cold, it hasn't been shown to help prevent respiratory infections in general, including coronavirus. Keep in mind too, when you do rinse your nose with saline to help cold symptoms, make sure the product is sterile. And if you opt for a neti pot, make sure that water has also been sterilized—either distilled water or water that's been boiled and then cooled back down—instead of tap water, which can increase your risk of infection."

From my fuzzy logic perspective, this is really an endorsement of using the Neti Pot.
----------------------------------------------------
Sinus rinsing, using a saline solution of salt and water, can be beneficial for those with allergies and sinus and nasal diseases. It moisturizes the nose while flushing out allergens and mucus, says John Craig, M.D., an ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon who specializes in nasal and sinus care (rhinology) at Henry Ford Health System.

But with the rise of the novel coronavirus, sinus rinsing might come with an increased risk: sinus irrigation devices like neti pots and squeeze bottles have surfaces that can harbor active COVID-19 droplets for hours, potentially increasing the spread of the virus. While studies have not proven this risk, it would be wise to prepare for such risks, and perform sinus rinses in the safest manner possible.

How to sterilize your device.
1. First, use boiled water (cooled down) or distilled water (microwaved for two minutes, then cooled) to make your own saline solution.
2. Use as instructed for irrigating through your nose.
3. Clean the inside and outside of your irrigation device with soap and tap water. This step is important to remove particle matter like mucus and other grime. It will allow the subsequent disinfectant to work more optimally.
4. Disinfect the device in one of two ways (both of which destroy bacteria and viruses including COVID-19):
5. Boil all components of the device in water for five minutes
6. Rinse the inside of the device and clean the rest of it with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Leave open to air dry.
----------------------------------------------------
Another website says:
Use a Neti-pot. Do it in the evening before you go to bed and in the morning when you wake up. The neti pot is effective at rinsing out mucus from the sinuses. It is very important to use clean filtered water and a clean pot. Neti can be drying, so you may add a little bit of cooking oil to the neti pot when sick. You can also add one drop of peppermint or eucalyptus essential oil to the neti pot.

Now we are talking. According to Life Science Publishing "Essential Oils Pocket Reverence",
Peppermint medical properties: anti-inflammatory, antitumoral, antiparasitic, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, gallbladder/digestive stimulant, pain relieving, curbs appetite.
Eucalyptus Radiata essential oil medical properties: antibacterial, antiviral, expectorant, anti-inflammatory.

---------------------------------------------------
So if you decide to use a Neti pot, consider adding a drop of peppermint or eucalyptus essential oil to the pure saline solution.

A lot of families visiting each other on nice weather mothers day. Some wearing masks some not, everybody social distancing. People are social distancing more like 15 to 20 feet not 6. I have not noticed a drop off in mask wearing except for maybe yesterday as people were visiting relatives.

My policy has not changed. Keep stores visitation at an absolute minimum. Wear masks there. Siblings do visit but outside with social distancing and mask-wearing.

The shutdown in New York was extended into early June. Upstate New York will start opening up first. Our county executive here on Long Island says late June to start reopening but it is up to Cuomo and ultimately it is up to the people as if people decide they have had enough there is not much Cuomo can do about it.

All the indicators are going down but slowly so if exponential growth does resume it will be from a much higher starting point then it was in February and March. And now we have that Kawasaki or Kawasaki like disease here.

That's the main reason I stopped using a neti pot after starting to use one for a very short time some years ago. The other reason I stopped is that I read that using one even with sterilized water and saline can introduce bacteria into the sinus cavities that aren't there.

ANOTHER CORONAVIRUS TREATMENT

Though there is no known scientific cure for COVID-19 yet, a three-drug combination appears to alleviate symptoms and shorten the duration of hospital stays, according to a new study.

The research, published in The Lancet, notes the combination of drugs interferon beta-1b, lopinavir–ritonavir and ribavirin worked better than the lopinavir–ritonavir combination alone on patients who have "mild to moderate" COVID-19 symptoms.

"This study showed that early treatment with the triple combination of antiviral therapy with interferon beta-1b, lopinavir–ritonavir, and ribavirin is safe and highly effective in shortening the duration of virus shedding, decreasing cytokine responses, alleviating symptoms, and facilitating the discharge of patients with mild to moderate COVID-19," researchers wrote. "Furthermore, the triple antiviral therapy rapidly rendered viral load negative in all specimens, thereby reducing infectiousness of the patient."

The researchers found that the group that was given the three-drug combination tested negative for the virus after seven days, while the control group tested negative after 12 days.

"The triple combination also alleviated symptoms completely within four days — a significantly shorter time than the control," the researchers added.

The study, which was a Phase II trial, was conducted by researchers in Hong Kong who analyzed patients in the city-state. They recruited 127 patients between Feb. 10 and March 2020. Of the 127 patients, 86 were given the three-drug combination, while the remaining 41 were assigned as a control group.

Interferon 1-b has generally been used to treat multiple sclerosis in the past, while lopinavir-ritonavir and ribavirin have been used to treat HIV and hepatitis C, respectively.

News of the study was first reported on by The New York Times.

A number of drugs are currently being tested to see if they can treat COVID-19, including Gilead's remdesivir, which was recently granted emergency use approval by the Food and Drug Administration.

The biotech company said last week it is working with other companies to expand its remdesivir manufacturing "through at least 2022." Gilead has previously said it would donate its available stock of the drug and is ramping up production.

The antiviral drug was previously used to treat Ebola patients and has been garnering massive attention as the world scrambles to contain the coronavirus pandemic. Experts, however, warn that people should not take the drug unless prescribed by a doctor.

The FDA also recently approved Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine candidate, mRNA-1273, allowing it to move to Phase II and bringing it one step closer to a potential treatment for the devastating disease.

It takes time to produce drugs in quantity. Who decides who will get drugs if there isn't enough to go around?

Depending on local system.
Money, party associations, maybe race... Each society has its own pecking order.

It seems everyone has their own opinions about what the government should and shouldn't do with social distancing rules and lockdowns and such. There's countless arguments about it on Facebook. Some are saying that lockdown should go on and on for months to stop more people dying, whilst others are saying that lockdowns should be lifted for the sake of the economy.

I'm more in the latter group. Now that we're all educated about the rules of social distancing and hygiene and the possible dangers of the virus, lockdowns should be lifted and we should be allowed to have a little normality in our lives - but still have the social distancing rules in places like stores and restaurants. If we keep following these rules, and get more people to wear masks (providing masks in almost every store even if it's something like a clothes store) and carry hand sanitizer gel and wear gloves if possible, then I think we will be all right.
Lockdowns are OK for a short while, but I don't think it's practical having it long term, because it will generate other problems like poverty. And poverty can kill lots of people too.

There are thousands of things on this planet that kills people, and the key is to work around these things. Hiding away from each other in our homes for months on end isn't really going to help our future. Humans need money to live and thrive, we can't abandon the economy and sit in our homes for years waiting for a cure. We're the cure, as long as we stick together and follow the rules. Yes a few more people may die but there are also people dying of other things like cancer, alcohol abuse, suicide, car crashes, diseases, hunger, heart attacks, the list goes on.

We humans have been ruling (and destroying) this Earth for thousands of years with tougher times than this, I'm sure we'll pull through.

i for one, do NOT want 80% of humanity to get this mess to establish "herd immunity" if such an outcome can at all be avoided.

I agree with you. Let's make a pact not to point fingers at anyone when the global economy tanks as a result. We cain't have it both ways:

Option 1: Keep going with the lock downs but the economies tank.
Option 2: Ease up or stop the lock downs to keep the economy going but more people get sick and die.

Having no vaccine, no proven and effective treatment and not even knowing if the virus remains incurably permanent in those who get it leads me to favor Option 1.

Economy tanking kills people via malnutrition, stress, and crime. Because of no money coming in and so much money going out governments go bankrupt growing economy tanking caused deaths substantially.

Letting the virus run rampant tanks the economy because of sick workers, permanently disabled workers, dead workers, and fear. If a pandemic is widespread enough the government can issue as many orders opening the economy as it wants people will hunker down at home anyways. Individuals and business starting closing down a week or two before their governments ordered them. The opposite is true also, mass defiance of lockdown orders can not be stopped.

There are only really bad options. The trick is “threading the needle” to produce the least horrible outcome. I do not have faith we will do that because of a bad combination of too much information via social media and not enough information because this is new. In America the political divisions are leading and will lead to wildly varying inconsistent public reactions. The public for the most part so far has been has been doing severe measures due to the combination of germaphobia and bombardment of information. As the economic pain increases and pain of lack of face to face social interaction increases, and numbers go down their are indications of people relaxing.

We can debate the lockdown vs economy options and in part because we are autistic we will but it will be a combination of human nature and mother nature that will decide this.
