Oh this is the doctor who did that to my XH's elder bro, he was suspended for malpractice but not exactly that (what happened with their family) so I am posting again to amend that bit:

Sifting through the early posts on this thread I happened upon this one on 4 February 2020 on page 14.

Look at the caption:

They sure did! [sarcasm with an underlying truth]

That's not the general feeling from the experts in the field. We are not turning a corner. We are losing a battle.

This is from Dr. Tom Frieden, ex-Director of CDC. https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/08/health/coronavirus-hospital-infections-frieden/index.html

... The next few days and weeks will determine:
- If sustained transmission begins in other countries, which unfortunately seems likely.
- If it does, whether it can be contained, which unfortunately seems unlikely.
- How severe the illness is among those who are infected, which we still don't know.

Not time to call for plan B, yet. But we will know in another week. Yes, there is a plan B, and it's not pretty. We are not talking about China. We are talking about the US. And please do notice: we have half a million homeless people here.

SPOT ON!

WEARING A FACE MASK

There was an article today about the benefits of wearing a face mask as we come out of shutdown.

Coronavirus infections would plunge if 80 percent of people wore masks, study says

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended wearing masks in public settings to slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. A new study suggests that cases of COVID-19 could be cut significantly if 80 percent of people heeded this advice.

The research, published by a group of international experts, created a model that shows the cases could be cut significantly if "(near) universal masking" is adopted.

The model the researchers built is known as the maskim simulator. One of the collaborators on the study, economist Guy-Philippe Goldstein, told Forbes that in addition to social distancing, wearing a mask is the only thing working "to flatten the curve of infections" as the world waits for treatments and vaccines.

The authors also noted several countries or regions that have a history of wearing masks in public during non-pandemic times, including Macau, Beijing, Taiwan, Singapore and Japan, have seen drastic reductions in the number of cases from their respective peaks. Beijing, Singapore and Japan underwent "partial lockdown," while Macau and Taiwan did not.

-----------------------------------------------------
As Eikonabridge pointed out near the beginning of this thread. Face mask provide a degree of protection. If you touch large droplets containing viral particles or even fine mist viral particles the mask will prevent you from touching your face and infecting yourself. But almost any mask will do this even Halloween masks.

But from my perspective there are different types of masks and N95's or better will filter out almost all viral particles whether they be large droplets, or fine mist droplets but most important of all these mask will filter out dried desiccated viral particles floating through the air over large distances.

So if you want to protect yourself, use an N95.

There seems to be a cluster in that area.

It came as the state's total number of coronavirus cases rose by 21, including two new cases which were linked to the Fawkner McDonald's franchise. The outbreak at the Fawkner outlet is now linked to 10 of the state's COVID-19 cases, while the cluster at the Cedar Meats Australia abattoir in Brooklyn [New South Wales] is linked to 91 infections.

So what is it about meat processing plants that make them particularly vulnerable to this viral infection? Many of the U.S. and Canadian meat processing plants are also being severely hit at the moment. There is something we are missing here.

According to another article:
“As soon as they found out about the extra cases they had boxes of face masks there, if you wanted to wear one, you know, put one on,” said a worker from the factory’s slaughter floor. “Our area gets pretty warm because we have a lot of sterilisers and hot water running, so it’s not too comfortable to be wearing one all the time.” A spokeswoman for Cedar Meats confirmed that the masks were only mandatory in the boning room, where the infection began, and not for all workers.

In this processing environment there are areas where hot humid water it used, making the wearing of face masks not only uncomfortable but also ineffective because moisture destroys mask integrity. The ideal humidity range for minimizing viral transmission is 40%-60% RH. In the winter, humidity is very low and viruses are transmitted through desiccated viral particle. But in a meat packing plant in areas of hot high humidity, the problem is different. It is the other extreme and viral transmission is primarily though touch transmission.

It is common knowledge that meat packing plants commonly employ illegal immigrants because nobody else will take those jobs. Which means that if you aren't working you aren't getting paid. With this sort of culture I'd expect workers to continue working even when they know they are sick. Not working isn't an option. Which means you need the sort of PPE that will take the very highest viral loading possible and still not transmit disease.

But is this the case in Australia?

“But there were some logistic constraints about not having everyone cease work immediately … they had to go through processing to be able to get there.”

They seem to have exactly the problem I alluded to--the culture in which people continue to work no matter what.

But the images in the video, which has had more than 3,327,000 views, shows the peeling paint and poorly lit interior of the facility, and underscores the shocking condition of Russia's provincial healthcare system. It seems that in this sprawling country, time is not the only thing that differs between the capital and the regions.

New York City is a hot spot for the infection. As the infection set in, many of the wealthy and elites fled the city. Some of them carried it with them and spread it to other regions. I mentioned a few weeks ago that many of the New York Elites were fleeing to Hawaii.

So one of the article today NYC tourist arrested in Hawaii after posting Instagram beach pics instead of quarantining

The individual was Tarique Peters, 23, of the Bronx. Passengers on trans-Pacific flights have their temperatures taken upon arrival at Hawaiian airports and are required to sign a document confirming they are aware they must self-quarantine for 14 days. “By signing the legal document, they acknowledge they understand violating the order is a criminal offense and they are subject to a $5,000 fine and/or a year imprisonment,” Peters arrived at O‘ahu on Monday and posted numerous pictures of himself on Instagram. One showed him on Honolulu's famed Waikiki Beach. He allegedly left his hotel room the day he arrived and traveled to many places using public transportation.

“Authorities became aware of his social media posts from citizens who saw posts of him – on the beach with a surfboard, sunbathing, and walking around Waikiki at night,” the governor's office said. So he was arrested because he was visiting the beaches when he should have been complying with the laws and remain in quarantine.
-----------------------------
It seems that the disease was spread by the real social elite - politicians, sports stars, actors. They were the initial spreaders bringing death and devastation into the cities of the common man.

As the coronavirus has spread out of China, there's been an interesting pattern about who is getting infected. Oftentimes in outbreaks - take cholera, for example - the disease devastates low-income neighborhoods first. It's far more likely to turn up in densely populated working-class areas than at a country club, say. COVID-19 seems to be behaving differently. Once it departed from China, the global spread of the virus has touched the highest echelons of society.

One of the first major clusters in Europe in late January was among these 21 people at a ski resort in France. And one of them had come over from Singapore. And he appears to be the one that carried the virus with him to France. And this group of ski buddies then all dispersed. And some of them went to the U.K. And some went to Spain. And others went to other parts of France. Thirteen of those 21 ended up testing positive.

Some of the very first cases in Hong Kong - they turned up at the Four Seasons Hotel and the W {Hong Kong?] Hotel. These are some of the most expensive hotels in Hong Kong.

Source: COVID-19's Global Spread Among The Relatively Rich Has Been Remarkable

How many actors, producers, musicians, politician and the wealthy have been infected so far. Some die and their names are noted in the daily news. IMHO this elite class of individuals feel they are exceptions, they are above the law. The law doesn't apply to them.

Years ago, I would get the flu. I would suffer a fever, headaches and the symptoms would come and go over several weeks. But it never really did go away. It just wore me down, day after day. I would suffer for 3 months. It settled in my lungs. I exhibited bronchitis. I would cough so hard that I would see stars. There was a rattle deep down in my lungs. I was struggling for each breath. I was slowly dying.

So it might not be so weird that some people can carry the virus for a long time and be unable to shed it completely.

In the US, many (maybe most) cannot afford to seek treatment for COVID-19.

Is there any programs for that? For people with minimal health insurance?

Cedar meats is a Chinese owned meat works that sells Halal meat to the muslim community. I doubt there's one Australian who works in that facility.

All testing and treatment for covid 19 is supposed to be free, but there are catches to that. For example, if the doctor doesn’t order a covid 19 test, it doesn’t pay. Even if there are no tests available. I’m sure there are other catches as well.
