Because burial anywhere else would have led to a) desecration of the grave, which would have been blamed on Americans (whether or not they were actually responsible), thus worsening our position worldwide; and b) the establishment of the grave as a place for a version of hajj, risking turning bin Laden from a criminal and possible martyr to a religious figure in his own right.

Burial at sea is in keeping with Islamic custom (thus helping the position that we're not barbarians - not always true, but it's what we should always aim for), and prevents the gravesite from becoming anybody's focal point.

Besides, what would you put on the headstone?

"OSAMA BIN LADEN
1957 - 2011

WORLD HIDE-AND-GO-SEEK CHAMPION
2001 - 2011"

+1

Also, Islamic requirement for burial within 24 hours of death.

I still think it's weird but ok I guess it makes sense. I don't know why you assume I would want him to have a headstone though. I only think it's a little weird that they didn't take a photo of his corpse as proof...yes I know that's morbid. But MissConstrue the Crazy will get off this forum for now as she's caused enough anger already... :?

No, it's good to have your insight and you've asked thought provoking questions. Yes I think I'd better get off this forum too, before I say something I will regret. This only happens on WP...

Must be the colour scheme or something!! !

Yes forget I said anything, and good day to you all...

Also, no other country wanted to take Osama's remains, probably for reasons already discussed. That may not be true of his son or any others killed.

Burying Osama at sea at unrecorded coordinates also makes his corpse forever inaccessible to his followers.

Why? Because people can't handle you having a differing angle of view on it?

You have no reason to believe it if there is no credible proof of it. And nothing of that sort has been delivered, at this point.

I find it "convenient" in more ways than one, just like it was "convenient" that he stayed alive for all this time, after having been revealed to have died in 2001.

Wow, finally got him. Good deterrence, hunting him for 10 years without giving up. Now, to be sure to find a way to hang that wolf's hide on the fence to warn the other wolves who might have ideas.

I wonder if this means we're getting out of Afghanastan any time soon or not, though??

Seconded.

Pres. Obama in his speech last night said the war in Afghanistan will continue,
and the War on Terror will not stop.

Probably a July withdrawal from Afghanistan won't happen at all.

Are these new news on this credible? No. In the light of the past, no, they are not.

One is dead, two will rise

It seems humans never learn...

Go USA! USA! USA!

When the two rise, we shall kill them also. Eventually the other side will run out of risers.

Great way to think.
Honestly ruveyn, I thought you were a smarter person.

Now that OBL is out of the picture,
do you feel safer now?

I didn't feel particularly endangered before, at least by al Qaeda. As Colbert's guest observed last night, "The people you should be afraid of are the Chinese. They can shoot down satellites in space, they can hack Google's database; bin Laden's guys can't make their underwear explode!"
