Attempted coup underway in Turkey, jets/gunfire in Ankara

Turkey was already facing an unstable security situation prior to the coup attempt. ISIS has carried out a series of very deadly attacks in Turkey recently, and the peace process between Turkey and PKK broke down in July 2015, leading to an escalation of attacks/counter-attacks etc.

With an inevitable purge of the military command structure forthcoming following the coup attempt, the security situation is likely to deteriorate even further.

I doubt ISS, PKK (and its offshoot, the TAK) are going to simply sit on their hands while chaos reigns in the Turkish military...

With this victory and elimination of threat, I think he will become "Turkey's Putin".

It is the worst case scenario. In Turkey there's conspiracy theories floating around that Erdogen set up the coup attempt as a false-flag just to give him an excuse to grab more power. I kind of doubt it, but a lot of people wouldn't put it past him. I don't think he's as cunning as Putin. There's still almost half of Turkey that despises him. He hasn't won over everyone, thankfully.

We're going to regret this coup not being successful but probably not as much as the dissenters in Turkey are, the mobs actually kills a few of these soldiers. I believed they beheaded one and tossed his body over the bridge into the Bosphorus. Increased Islamification, increased autocratic rule, this purge will be brutal and wide stretching. It seems like Egypt where democracy has failed as the majority of the population supports theocratic rule but now the military has failed as well. Turkey should not be a part of NATO, they need to be out out out. Erdogan is calling this coup 'a gift from Allah'.

I think the idea the this cleric Gulen was involved to be pretty silly. I actually went to a 'Gulen school' here in the US for a amount short time. Wasn't a bad school but was definitely run by Turks and had an odd amount of teachers/staff who could barely speak English.

The way Erdogan keeps bringing up Fethullah Gülen reminds me of something... Can't quite put my finger on it...

... although - in all fairness - we don't actually know for certain that Gülen *wasn't* behind the attempted coup... but Erdogan certainly wasted no time capitalizing on these events...

My thoughts as well. HE is conducting a very Stalinesque purge in its wake. And he moves towards Putin, in the flesh, rapidly. He is trying to repair ties with Russia desperately (for Tourist money). He may have other reasons as well. Putin must be delighted how things have turned out. Shearing Turkey off NATO and the EU would be a coupe for him.

They are still bitter enemies on Syria though. It's doubtful they will ever be allies.
