In Houston in particular, massive suburban sprawl (particularly in Katy, west of H-town) and piss poor land use policies have really screwed up drainage quality. The city has no zoning, and the sprawl has created a whole crapload of impervious cover. (http://www.nemo.udel.edu/manual/Chap2Web.pdf)

Austin and San Antonio have done a reasonable job at addressing IC, because of proximity to the Edwards Aquifer.

Osteen did eventually open up the church.

He is but one of a large number of "prosperity" pastors found in many countries throughout the world.

However, to be fair in this, non of the photos in the linked article show whether or not the church was flooded to any degree. it just shows an old image of the church interior.

My country is home to one of the most active and compassionate relief organizations: Gift of the Givers, which is headed by a Muslim (Su'fi). They help in all countries affected by war or natural disaster irrespective of religion or politics. From their website:

Did parts of Houston come out of this okay?

I'm amazed that more people didn't lose power, actually. You must have lots of underground wires there. That's why we didn't lose power with Sandy.

Oil Companies and local gas stations are using Harvey as an excuse to raise prices.

We didn't flood or lose power. However, my aunt had 2 inches of water in her house, and a cousin had 4 inches in hers.

The grocery stores are open at limited hours, and at the HEB by my house, it felt like Venezuela--lots of empty aisles. But plenty of wine and ice cream!

Many of the restaurants are opening, but with limited hours and menus. Gas is still hard to come by.

@kraftie: We had underground lines installed just a few weeks ago. Crosby is an hour away, so we weren't affected much by the chemical plant fire there. Western parts of Houston were affected the worst, especially in Fort Bend County.

I live in Dallas. A lot of people have come here to escape the storm. There have been a lot of donations and people trying to volunteer to help so that is good. There is a place close to where I live where about 350 people are staying. They are turning away donations and volunteers because they have gotten so many. I don't know if the people who are still there now have the means to leave, but it is good to see other cities make sure our people are taken care of.
