I'd still make it harder for future little sh"ts who want to emulate Dylan Roof to get their hands on guns...

Saying the terribly offensive things about them that you do is incredibly hateful and insensitive for someone who claims to "feel for them."

Good for these kids. Like they said, they've had enough. The legislators and citizens of this country have done things their way and the result is that students are being shot and killed nearly every second day. It's reasonable for these kids to demand real change to America's gun control laws & culture. They are correct in utilizing ultimatums to incentivize politicians to make sensible gun control laws a reality or be voted out & I hope they persist on that part of their campaign as anyone who continues to pander to the NRA & gun lobbyists despite the fact that the children of their constituents are being murdered because of their inaction deserves to lose their job. They're also correct that no one outside of active duty military people needs tools designed to kill 17 people in mere minutes. I hope they are successful in their quest for a better America via sensible gun control.

The point is that with better gun control it wouldn't have been so easy for him to obtain a gun.

Have you ever heard of a "crime of opportunity," or a "weapon of opportunity,"?

Example: Front door is unlocked and ajar. Someone walks by and see this, decides to enter and steal things because it's just that easy. It's a crime of opportunity because even though they hadn't planned on robbing a house that day, the thief couldn't resist the opportunity that was so easily available to them. Had the door been shut and locked & perhaps a bright light on outside for all to see who approaches the house, that potential thief would have likely carried on walking by. No opportunity, no crime.

Example 2: A baseball bat is sitting in a front entrance where one of the kids left it. Their dad and uncle get in a heated argument and the father asks his brother to leave. When they're in the entrance, the brother picks up the bat and breaks his brothers knees with it. He'd have never been able to pick up that bat and use it as a weapon if it were put away properly vs. sitting within arms reach on his way out the door. He utilized it as a weapon of opportunity.

Through better gun control & background checks, if Cruz had been prevented from legally buying a gun, especially one capable of murdering 17 people in a little over 6 minutes, he wouldn't have had the opportunity to do what he did. If it wasn't so easy to obtain guns legally, yes, he could have sought one illegally - but it would at least be more difficult than just strolling into his local gun shop and buying one. If it IS just as easy, or easier, for him to buy a gun illegally, then he would have. It must be at least somewhat more difficult to obtain one illegally or he'd have done so, obviously. If it is, in general, nearly as easy to buy a gun illegally, then that speaks volumes to the ineffectiveness of gun control laws in the USA if guns are that readily available to anyone who wants one and should shine a spotlight on the problem.

It is possible to obtain guns both legally and illegally here in Canada, but neither option is so readily available as it is in the USA. From types of weapons to sales and marketing laws, it's legislation in America that paves the way for guns to be everywhere. Granted, a part of it is also the marketing of the USA's gun culture - it appears stronger than anywhere else on Earth.

The point others, especially outside the USA, are making is that the conditions shouldn't exist for it to be "easy as hell for him to get it illegally," and we know from our experiences of living in countries with stricter gun control laws and less gun violence as a result that limiting the availability of guns to people reduces violent gun crimes plain and simple.

I think attitudes are finally shifting. It took Trump & Co. ruining things further for people to realize that their vote matters. It's evidenced by all the Democrats winning various local elections over and over in recent weeks. This might finally be the moment where Americans start voting sensibly, voting for viable candidates & positive change to public policies.

At least you're in hermit country instead of completely overwhelmingly surrounded by millions upon millions of those types.

Those kids started this movement on their own accord and are using their voices to demand change in America because they're sick of being shot and killed. It really is that simple.

I have seen no evidence this has been organized and started by anybody other then the students. But the idea that this came out completly out of nowhere and happened without outside help is not quite right. David Hogg told Bill Mahar he was at Obama rallies at age 7. Any viewing of interviews with the organizers shows these people are very knowlegable about how to present themselves to the media. And they have had outside money from people like Michael Bloomberg and celebrities. Because of social media these things can be organized at a speed that seems miraculous to older observers.

Since this is being compared to the civil rights movement it is worth noting that one of the most famous incidents of that era involved the deliberate use of children by Martin Luther King in Birmingham, Alabama. Children from age 6 through high school received extensive training in non violent resistance and overcoming urges to run. He had them stage school walkouts dressed at their sunday best. With the city jails full the police chief arch segregationist “Bull” Conner ordered the fire hoses turned on the kids at an intensity that strips bark off of trees. Then he sicked dogs on them. The use of children was criticized at the time. Attorney General Robert Kennedy said “an injured, maimed, or dead child is a price that none of us can afford to pay", Malcolm X said “Real men don't put their children on the firing line." The use of children worked. Photos and TV images of the children being attacked were spread worldwide. The images of children being attacked have been credited as a major factor of Birmingham getting desegregated and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed. 55 years later those images remain as one the iconic symbols of racism. So it is an ends justify the means question. I remain an outlier and think the deliberate use of children for political purposes in never justified even though I realize in this social media era this is like trying to fight a nuke with a slingshot. But again I don’t think the this gun control movement is outsider started.

The kids started it. Others have rallied behind them in support. It's well known that March For Our Lives has a highly educated adult board of directors and deep pockets due to the donations of many citizens as well as high profile celebrities.

Why are you, and many on this forum members constantly attacking responsible gun owners? Why are dealers to blame? They run all firearms sales through NICS and some have denied transactions because they didn't feel comfortable with the buyer, even if they pass background checks. The problem isn't with them, they follow the law and are frequently audited by the ATF. The problem lies within the courts and allowing violent criminals to plea down to a misdemeanor (with time served) allowing them to still legally purchase a firearm when released. Next would be mental health facilities not reporting people who are involuntarily committed or deemed mentally unfit to the state (some, not all states fail to do this). Laws are already in the books, but we don't use them or become very relaxed. But that's not what you or anyone else is interested in, because it's not a ban on guns. It's hard to talk gun control (not that I would support it) when you see s**t like this...

The shooter was visited by police 39 times leading up to the event.
Family and teachers had identified him as a threat to other students.
Family allowed him access to guns in their house.
The shooter claimed that he was "going to be a professional school shooter" and the FBI was warned and did nothing.
There were several deputies outside the school during the shooting taking a knee.

So many directions to the point the finger other then guns. These issues need to be addressed first.[/quote]

...You forgot the one about " Mass/school shootings happen because of the divorce industry ", which I've seen made, and the " m/s shootings happen because of.the teaching of Darwin's evolutionary theory ", which I have also seen. You feel that insufficiently strong criminal sentences and pleabargaining/pleaing down are the reason for m/s shootings, when I can't now think of any m/s shooters with any such records behind them. You call for far larger and stricter involuntary commitment as a cure for m/s shootings - so you can have your gunsy wunsies - as someone ASD/AS, thus " defectivs ", you'd likely be among the first to have your guns taken away, if not locked up in the snake pit and held down and pumped full of meds. Guns, and their availability/regulation, CANNIT! be even addressed until you say so! :P And when would that be  ?.........
PAnti-gun regulation-ers also dredge up the argument of " a gun regulation dude't stop THIS from happening, so that proves that Gun Laws Don't Work " - that laws must work perfectly or they are invalid. That describe you as well?

@SH90: I, pretty much, agree with every one of your posts.

Did you see the clip of the kids, at the march, who were asked: "What constitutes an 'assault weapon'?", or something like that? Not ONE of them, could answer----they couldn't even give the WRONG answer (the definition according to the MSM, and Nancy Pelosi and her ilk). Now, why wouldn't someone, who was supposedly so passionate about an issue as to attend a march, have done the research of ALL angles of that issue, so that they would be prepared to truly, TRULY, fight for their cause? (AFAIC, someone whispers in that Hogg kid's ears, for instance!!)

IMO, it all comes-down to them not being credible, and/or parroting their parents, and/or being paid..... That Hogg kid cussin' t'beat the band..... Good grief!!

Uh, maybe because they don't care what the technical literal definition of the kind of gun is that's being used to murder them? They want ALL of the guns & flying bullets to remain out of their schools and ALL of themselves and their peers to not be shot or killed. How can you be so insensitive as to attack them on the basis of a gun type definition when all they're asking for is help from adults to not be shot at? :? If they can't tell you the calibre of the bullet that splattered their best friend's grey matter, does that mean they didn't get shot & killed?

Gregg Popovich Rips Trump's 'Cowardice' For Ducking March For Our Lives
"A real leader" would have met with protesters instead of weekending in Florida, the San Antonio Spurs coach said.

NBA coach Gregg Popovich had more than basketball on his mind before his San Antonio Spurs played the Milwaukee Bucks in Milwaukee on Sunday.

The outspoken Popovich, referring to the weekend’s March For Our Lives in Washington to push for gun control, ripped President Donald Trump’s “cowardice” for leaving town instead of meeting with protesters.

The march attracted hundreds of thousands to rally for tougher gun laws after last month’s Parkland, Florida, mass shooting and other school killings. Trump proposed tightening some laws earlier this month, but apparently backed down after meeting with National Rifle Association representatives. He spent the weekend at his resort in Florida and failed to acknowledge the protest.

JASON MILLER VIA GETTY IMAGES
Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich and President Donald Trump are definitely not on the same team when it comes to Trump's leadership.
“If you just sit for a moment and imagine those bullets going through those bodies, and what those bodies might have looked like afterwards, how can the president of the country talk about all the things he’s going to do, and then go have lunch with the NRA and change it?” Popovich said, according to CBS Sports.

“It’s just cowardice,” the coach continued. “A real leader would have been in Washington D.C., this weekend, not at his penthouse at Mar-a-Lago. He would have had the decency to meet with a group, to see what’s going on, and how important it is, and how important our children should be to us. So for all those politicians involved, it’s just a dereliction of duty.”

Popovich, one of the more socially conscious coaches in professional sports, has questioned Trump’s leadership before. In October, he called the president a “soulless coward” and “pathological liar.”

Makes sense. Any other President might have acted.. Presidential about this.
