I'm reading about the Wilmington insurrection of 1898:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilmingto ... on_of_1898

This was a time in which black people were actually very successful in Wilmington, NC, and had built businesses and gotten elected to the city government. Then 2000 white men in the opposition decided to burn it all down, as they wanted to restore white supremacy, murdering at least 60 people. They kicked all the uppity blacks and whites out of the city and made the city government all white again. They then rewrote history to either make it seem like it was the blacks that started it, or like both sides were equally villainous. The library in Wilmington for the longest time refused to allow people to research 1898:

Yup. This and similar events created a trauma in the black community that discouraged success and achievement. Because they learned, if you're too successful, then the white people will come and burn it all down again.

This is where I think what you mentioned, a truth and reconciliation commission, could really come in handy. But of course, I expected it not to go anywhere in American politics, even though it's necessary with how there has been so much denial and gaslighting regarding these events.

I think the United States (and probably many other empires) was founded largely on fiction. For example George Washington defeating the British would never have been possible without French troops, all types of stories and myths around the liberty bell, Washington cutting the acorn tree, and colonial American patriots taking pitchforks to battle the British infantry with their wives in tow carrying bailes of water for their menfolk. Those who yearn for the southern confedracy glossing over slavery to claim it was about state rights. Manifest destiny where god allowed "good American christians" to occupy land that belonged to native peoples. Plenty of myth that feeds into white American identitarian politics.

And it gets votes. "I'll get all those n*****s voting democrat for the next 200 years" - Lyndon B. Johnson.

I'll put Johnson's actions above his rhetoric, especially concerning civil rights.
The thing I've noticed about cynicism among conservatives is that they can't imagine anyone else being sincere in their political actions, expecting everyone to be playing some angle just like them.

I am cynical sans affiliation. I do not necessarily think everyone's actions are disingenuous on an individual basis, but I believe as far as the whole enchilada goes there are a lot of ulterior motives.

So even if there was some ulterior motive behind giving millions of people the vote, and guaranteeing their civil rights, that makes the end result bad?

It shows that there are ulterior motives in the the civil rights agenda as a whole, including presently, put forth by wealthy white democrat politicians. Mainly that it needs to perpetrated to maintain that advantage. In other words racism needs to continue as a major problem.

So am I to understand that you think the civil rights movement and legislation was a bad thing because of alleged "ulterior motives?"
Believe it or not, there are still people who are motivated by simply wanting to do the right thing.

Try being black from the beginning of slavery in the United States to 1965 in most places in the United States.

Then you'll know why there was the "need" for the Civil Rights movement.

I'm all for civil rights.
I'm all for equal opportunity.
I don't have enough money to help anyone other than the homeless man on the corner, I help him.
The wealthy will not redistribute their wealth.
People are intermarrying as they find love.
Man has remained the same since history started being documented. My race/people were enslaved by the Turks, was that 'less' of a trauma because our skin was not as dark as blacks? It's been many years since that happened, I don't still feel traumatized by it. Man was made to be resilient, life was made to be resilient as evidenced by evolution.
None of the things put forth on this thread are ever going to happen, because the people who are thinking it up aren't billionaires. The people who are thinking it up are the ones who have little. Of course they want redistribution of wealth. And that's just how rich people view it.
I'm still waiting on some realistic plans. Plans like everybody get out there and bust their ass, grab life by the throat and even if you never win, nobody can ever say your were a quitter. But, nobody ever says that kind of stuff. They say, "take what belongs to someone else, or force a bunch of people to marry each other and redistribute that way." I have to say that this stuff never occurred to me, because I think everybody has a say. And hearing it come from other humans is just the craziest s**t I've ever heard.

I mean Civil Rights for everybody! Please don't assume that I have a narrow view of it----that it's "only for blacks."

I know about the Armenian Genocide. I know about the Tutsi/Hutu Genocide. And the Holocaust, of course! And various other instances of ethnic cleansing, discrimination, stuff like that. I read my history.

I'm into resilience in people, too. I'm not into feeling sorry for myself because "my people" were victims of the Holocaust.

I'm just saying there was a REASON for the Civil Rights movement.

And please, nobody cite crazy Bernie Sanders. He wants to give other rich people's money away, not his. He'll still be living in the house on the hill while we are all fighting over a grape.

Please don't assume I'm "just some liberal."

I'm a pragmatist.

I like you too, Persephone. Thanks.

I wasn't thinking you weren't for all civil rights, Kraftie. I find your posts to be very level and on point.

I'll quote him as much as I feel the need to, thank you very much.

Also, that last sentence you mentioned I think really shows the cynicism that many conservatives have about politics. I'm a bit more optimistic than you, and I think Bernie Sanders is really fighting for us. He has shown a real willingness to put himself on the line, like when he fought for civil rights in 1963 and was arrested for it:

I think it's not a fair comparison to contrast one person's cultural/historic obstacles with another person. The African Americans are also very resilient to have survived being slaves and treated as animals/property for 400 years.

As beneficii has indicated they have been forced to coalesce as a group for self-support because they have literally received no support from the American government when white folks have destroyed any little thing they built. I posted images from 1975 showing white American men, women and children throwing rocks and bricks at black people who trespassed onto a beach, incredulous that within our lifetime a black man was forbidden to move into a so called "white spaces"....still happens today when a black person accidentally drives or walks into a gated community (ever heard of Trayvon Martin). In schools and residential areas segregation has grown again as "white flight" occurs where white folk leave in droves taking with them money and resources so there's nothing left to invest into the areas.

As you have indicated you are a Trump supporter I thought it's important to at least have some empathy or the plight of people who are your fellow Americans. It's easy for Donald Trump to perpetuate this ethnic separatism because he is a billionaire who has enjoyed the apex of white privilege and there is no fall out for him. For normal Americans it's been a distraction from the job of nation building. I think it was Lincoln who warned of the repurcussions of a "house divided"

I don't advocate separatism, my children and (grand) were/are in public school. My family advocated separatism, I went to private school. My ancestors could not seem to get ahead, they moved from Athens to the US. Your rant still doesn't change the fact that none of the solutions you offered up are viable ones, because they involve forcing someone else to do something they might not want to do.

It was a figure of speech because I knew someone would cite Bernie, who will remain rich while he robs everyone else. You can cite Bozo the clown, for all I care. Bernie's solutions have nothing to do with personal integrity, and everything to do with stealing from one to give to another.

I'm going to stop responding to threads like these in a rational fashion. From now on, any topic I see that involves changing everyone else, instead of oneself, I'm just going to label a 'taker' thread.

Hmmm, what do you have that I want? How can I go about getting what I want, while simultaneously rejecting any personal responsibility for how my life is going? Takers...
