There's certainly a history of viruses originating in China... some of the history dates from times when deliberate human genetic engineering definitely wasn't a thing.
I'm convinced we've lived through similar viruses over the decades. But no one made a fuss. They were seen as particularly bad flu years. This time around, we're destroying the economy over a virus that isn't really THAT destructive or even all that deadly. But that's crazy conspiracy talk, right? Let's get back to talk of genetically modified super viruses!
For every killer virus that hits the big time, there will be plenty that never make it.
So yes, there will have been lots of viruses that never got very far. Either they morphed into something less harmful, or chose to specialise in a host that wasn't us, or they never moved very far geographically.
I don't think that's a good reason to ignore Covid-19, though. While there are plenty of viral also-rans, there are also some that do a huge amount of damage, and this is one of those. I know there are plenty of people saying "It's no worse than flu" but they ignore the fact it's equivalent with flu despite 10 months of elaborate control measures. Had those measures not been in place, would we be seeing parity with modern-day flu mortality? No, of course not.
