What does this do to the documents case??? Can he argue he was "officially" stealing those classified documents???

That's a Federal case, right? His plan is likely: (1) get elected, (2) pardon himself. (But, can he pardon himself?)

Thats the question.

If the POTUS orders the assasination of a foreign terrorist to save the nation ...it might be dubbed "illegal" in the next administration, but since he did the killing as POTUS he would be immune from prosecution.

But if the POTUS pulls out a gun in the Oval office and shoots his wife...even after this SCOTUS ruling ....he would still be tried for murder because...shooting your spouse is not an official duty as POTUS!

Stealing top secret documents and storing them at your private residence would be more like shooting your wife than like ordering the Seals to kill Ben Laden I would think.

It seems like the Supreme Court finally made its ruling. So maybe some sanity will finally come to the U.S.

The Supreme Court made the Dredd Scott Decision. If anything, that helped push the country into Civil War.

Apparently America now has a king.
What Nixon did - using government resources to suppress evidence against him - would be legal.

Maybe George III wasn't so bad after all. :lol:

Ironic. That this day...the day that will be remember as "the day democracy died in America" comes just two days before we will celebrate the birth of American democracy...when we declared independence from George III.

The timing and significance couldn't be worse, could it. Appalling.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor's Dissent is worth reading - if only to confirm that there are still 3 reasoning adults in the Supreme Court.

That's definitely possible based on the way that the ruling was written. Normally, I would have a bit more faith that "official acts" wouldn't include things that are clearly criminal like illegal wiretaps and burglary. But, considering what we've seen with the court in recent years, I don't think they deserve any deference at all.

I have no doubt that's going to be the MAGA party line. This ruling is completely constitutionally baseless; I don't care what the Supreme Court says. No President has ever made such a horrifically specious claim! If there was any such precedent for it, why would Ford have pardoned Nixon? No other President before Trump had ever violated the law so flagrantly that he would demand that his sycophants on the court should give him a license to get away with crime!

He's avoided a Nixon type impeachment. Perhaps in Nixon's time even if he was exonerated his reputation would have resulted in rejection by the (then) American public who would have not tolerated a corrupt ex-president.

I hope trials will continue to be conducted on the other corrupt politicians of both parties, if it stops at Trump it will be for the sake of a political class in competition with him but if trials continue maybe this could be the start of accountability for politicians of the U.S. I personally would like every foreign policy advisor of the U.S. since World War 2 to be held accountable for its disasters.
