Maybe 'women & children' are less likely to be perceived as possible combatants so it's harder for a propaganda machine to claim otherwise?

Yeah, I think that's largely it.

The UN probably also made the distinction because of certain perceptions in certain locales, but I don't feel like opening that can of worms. I will say that giving the breakdown for "women and children" would garner more sympathy for Palestine than they might otherwise have, so it's probably a good thing to include it.

By your logic we should ignore Israel too then. Why should Israel get billions of aid from the US each year...if X number of peoples around the world also need a homeland or whatever?

So HAMAS sadistically killed a few civiians. By your logic we should ignore it.

The global tears for Palestinians may be perceived as an insult to the Uighers, Rohingya, Tamils, Yemeni and South Sudanese (to name a few) who have been largely ignored as scores of their people were killed and the perpatrators of their genocide have been permitted to flourish.

You didnt really answer my question.

Which means that you tacitly agree that it cuts both ways- we shouldnt give a crap those Israelies murdered by HAMAS either. Indeed we shouldnt support Israel at all.

And...if you get mugged, or your daughter gets raped...the police should ignore it because...so many other folks out there are victims of crime.

I mean ...if the cops DID help you that would be ...an INSULT to all of those other victims of crime out there.

Also...please stop conflating with Somalia with South Sudan.

Women and children have made up more than 62 per cent of the fatalities, while more than 15,273 people have been injured.

In its latest humanitarian update on the Gaza-Israel crisis UN humanitarian aid coordination office, OCHA, said that more than 1,000 have been reported missing and “are presumed to be trapped or dead under the rubble”.

Umm, why we are still counting women in specific? :p
Aren’t we all equal?

I was just quoting the UN. You could complain about it to them.

They were probably trying to highlight the fact that the fatalities are occurring to civilians, not that that isn’t already clear.

Hey UN, am I a combatant by default? :|

The UN probably thinks you would be to SOME people.

WTF

Any "global tears" right now are for humanity as a whole. For suffering civilians, for innocent people who are trapped in this Hell through no fault of their own, regardless of where the hell they're from. The tears are for mass casualties and people screaming for their children, their spouses, their parents, or even their own lives.

idgaf where anyone was born or what their nationality is.

I care that there is a humanitarian crisis, just like all the other times I've cried for peace.

Well said!

I don't understand why people are making such distinctions unless it's because they are justifying their own absence of compassion and empathy.

The attacks on Israel by Hamas were devastating. The atrocities that are being committed in Palestine are devastating. Situations that are happening elsewhere in the world (now and in the past) are devastating.

We're all human beings (unless we're lizard people). The specific country we're from just doesn't matter.

I wasn't meaning to. I was trying to be inclusive by mentioning them.

What? Even that sapient, space-faring extra-terrestrial species of reptilian humanoids only known as 'Visitors' , they were dodgy :alien: although Freddy Krueger appeared to be a nicer visitor than most.

I suppose I would take them on a case-by-case basis while exercising appropriate caution.

Maybe I'm being.. I dunno what the right word is.. cold ? Unsympathetic/lacking empathy ? Something, but:

With this war, and the war in Ukraine, and the other skirmishes around the world either continuing in full swing or about to kick off, and other major "news," events like the legal downfall of the former guy trump etc.. I just find myself caring less and less and less about any of the daily headlines. All of this crap is going to happen regardless of how much or how little I know about it. It's not that I don't care at all and don't want to hear or know anything about any of it, but I'm just so over the hour by hour play by play news headlines of negativity & fear porn and just kinda feel like "Ok, team Israelis do your thing for a week or three, team hamas do whatever you're gonna do with whoever's backing you - Iran, Russia, whatever.. and then let's see a bullet point scorecard of major events, perhaps casualty figures, war crime stats, and maybe a highlight reel of video footage.. condense every 1-3 weeks into a 60 second recap and I'm good."

Maybe cold af, but I really truly believe it's hard to care to want to have a constant play by play update Unless you're in an area that's affected by knowing things like whether rockets are airborne and on their way to you, or if you're in a nearby area that could get drawn into the drama vortex. Everyone else around the world has other s**t to do besides drive themselves nuts over hearing every little detail about every shot fired and every person killed. Hell, we've all also got to focus on work and paying taxes so that the countries we're from can aid/intervene hopefully appropriately and beneficially. I do care that we ideally help situations where we can, it's just with more and more and more bad news by the hour and minute streaming from all over the world I think people are just getting overwhelmed with it and need to tune out for our own sanity & productivity in our own daily lives.

All these wars accomplish nothing but to sow dragon’s teeth for future generations to harvest.

When we see the isrealis invade Gaza, it is probably going to be very casualty inducing battle. Especially with Hamas creating tunnels, and probably planting bombs/suicide bombs in those tunnels. The battle is long overdue for someone eager to see it unfold.
