There are many analogies to the 1980 riots mentioned in some of the posts on this thread. These started in Toxteth, Liverpool and spread quickly to other places including Brixton in London, Handsworth in Birmingham, St Pauls in Bristol, and also in Chapeltown in Leads and Moss Side in Manchester. These were termed race riots but were anything but. If I recall correctly, they were in protest to loss of freedom, particularly the Sus law, a informal name for a stop and search law that permitted a police officer to stop, search and potentially arrest people on suspicion of being in breach of a very old Vagrancy Act. The riots were successful in that the Sus law was repealed in 1981. Many ordinary people got involved in the riots across racial boundaries.

Since the 1980s Briton is a less free place, There have been several laws that have removed rights and freedom in the name of anti-terrorist laws. Ordinary people are now under pressure through the financial crisis and government cut backs while the few rich elite are relatively unscathed. Without the right to protest freely, a coalition government that is in power without a public mandate and little opportunity for people to voice their concerns the situation is like a pressure cooker. I am glad I am out of the UK in my safe haven in Hong Kong. I do not support these riots but it is understandable that they are occurring. I suppose it is a bit like a communal melt down. I fear that there may be more to come.

twitter and FB is full of s**t with whats going on as last nite on that it was rumoured that parts of Liverpool city centre when going to be targets. That never happened plus it tip people off to take safety and security steps.

The problem is that, as in Ulster, the police here are not being proactive in dealing with riot situations. They're just standing back and basically letting the rioters do what the hell they like, only intervening to arrest some of the rioters once everything has died down.

Again, oh, they say - some of them are children! Balls to that - send out a very clear and public message to children specifically about what can and will happen to them if they riot. They choose to break that? Expect to be shot at.

A case in point a 10 kid was lutting vokka from a Tesco's on Myrtle Street last nite.
On radio mersyside before mate was the dept leader of UKIP calling for the army to step into this.

BassMan_720 read some of my past comments this had sweet FA to do with the Toxtie riots of the 80s, as thoses riots were started by people local to the Toxteth area, last nites riots had about 60% of people from the north end of Liverpool starting it.

Edit: I do know what am talking about as I know a few people who do community work in Toxteth plus I have friends and family friends living in that part of Liverpool.
