no, she is being touted as someone more important than any old nice, presentable, and personable volunteer. she was intentionally brought in as a special guest, which is different than having a random person come in and read. she is only famous for the porn, not for the "acting" she did after that, so she is kind of irrelevant as any sort of special guest.

.

I don't watch porn yet I have seen one of her movies. She was actually the star of a Steven Soderbergh movie and he's a pretty respectable director. Oceans Eleven, Oceans Twelve, Syriana, Sex Lies and Videotape etc. etc. etc. He has a long and excellent resume and is one of my favorite directors so I just automatically rent any movie I know he has directed. This is how I saw a Sasha Gray movie. She was the star of Girlfriend Experience by him. She played a prostitute and was not a very good actress. Disappointed, I went to IMDB to find out why Steven Soderbergh had hired a terrible actress to star in his movie. That's when I found out she was a porn star.

All this is to say that I can understand how this happened. Probably somebody heard she was the star of a Steven Soderbergh movie (and she was!) and to that person, that was her fame. Of course none of those kids could see that movie since it's a hard R but I strongly suspect that whoever made this decision hadn't seen it either. They were probably thinking of his very famous Oceans movies and made some assumptions. They couldn't get Julia Roberts (who starred in his Oceans movies) but they got this other actress who starred in one of his movies. And then people just got starstruck by the concept of having somebody who was the star of a Steven Soderbergh movie and never investigated deeper than that,

i understand how it can happen, as most likely they read her press package which probably skilfully excluded any adult references including any descriptions of mainstream movies like Girlfriend Experience that she has performed in. there is no doubt in my mind that it was an accident.

what i was discussing was whether she would have been a good choice to bring into a classroom, and i would say no. i perfectly understand the parental objections to it. but i have no doubt she was not an intentional choice to bring in the classroom as it could be a career killer for the teacher.

I just don't see the wisdom in (further) ostracizing former adult performers unless they denounce their former occupation. Normally at least in the US, that would fall under prior restraint and not be permitted.

Interesting thread - shame I haven't seen it before. What I think is the problem is that parents came to pick up their children, saw her, and suddenly all looked to the ground in collective shame for their bedroom porn habits. When they had safely returned home, they immediately started writing angry letters. It's not like those children knew who she was.

Wow.

Most people who work with kids are subject to a background check for any criminal record. The reason is because this is a very vulnerable population. What happens when kids go home and ask mommy and daddy what Sasha Grey does for a living? Or the literate ones using computer access to do a google search?

Plus, this woman seems to have no shame about her past career. Sure, it's alright to be in the industry when you are a grown adult and you are free to make your own choices, but when you make that career decision, I'm sure you're not expecting to be role model of the month for children. That kind of decision comes with a cost, and in this case, the cost is using her celebrity status to be a role model for young children.

Who says she was supposed to be a role model? She was only reading a story.

Kids look up to any adult at that age.

I spent like half an hour entertaining a kid today when he could've easily played with the other kids, just because I taught him for half an hour once a week. So cute, but vulnerable.

Maybe if she was famous for something else, and actually got far as an actress, it wouldn't be so bad. But like hyperlexia said, you look her up on google and you find out about her pornstar past first.

I suspect if she or the teacher made no mention of how she used to make her money, the kids would only think of her as that nice, pretty lady who read them a story.

When people read this, they seem to disregard the word "former".

Whatever, you're free to have your own opinion, I'm just saying the people who are responsible for creating a safe environment for the kids have to be very careful. It's best to err on the side of caution than to take a chance with a kids future, since it would be the group's responsibility if anything goes wrong. It sounds like the parents didn't have a say in the decision either. If some parents are okay with letting this woman be a role model for their kids, fine, but you can't just assume that all parents would.
