It is just one commuter train and it only has three cars. Most people either drive or take the bus in these parts. My guess is those who usually take the train are driving to work instead.

I drove to another state yesterday and I stopped at one of the rest areas along the highway. I was a little amazed because the rest stop which is normally crowded was less than 1/4 full. I asked the receptionist if this was normal. She misinterpreted what I said and indicated that there was significantly less traffic on the highway than normal and she was confused because this was just a normal day.

So it looks as if when people perceive the coronavirus threat is real, they will avoid contact and possible infection. They will limit their travel and exposure.

That also links to another story I read yesterday about a family who broke quarantine so their daughter could attend a school dance.

In Missouri, the family was originally told to stay at home after their older daughter – who returned from Italy – contacted public health officials to report having symptoms of the fast-spreading virus on Thursday. She had been self quarantining herself at home with her parents who were not showing symptoms. She went to a hospital on Friday and tested "presumptively positive" on Saturday.

The family was told to stay at home, but the father brushed aside instructions by the state's health department, according to County Executive Sam Page.

Teenagers tend to think they are bullet proof.

Every spring there is a mass migration in the United States. It is called Spring Break. It is considered a Rite of Passage. According to Wikipedia "Spring break is a vacation period in early spring at universities and schools which started during the 1930s in the United States and is now observed in many other countries as well. Spring break is frequently associated with extensive gatherings and riotous partying in warm climate locations such as Daytona Beach, Florida and Cancun, Mexico, attended regardless of participants' educational standings."

It is like an uncontrollable event. Teenagers from all over the U.S. will storm an area and the coronavirus can be a breeding ground for cross fertilizing the infection all over the nation within a week or two time.

Take the usual precautions as you do to prevent transmission of colds/flu.

Bring paper towels for when you hang on to the handrails. Cough into the inside of your elbow, rather than your hands.

"telecommuting" is a meme. what a giant middle finger to all the gig economy workers, service industry and blue collar workers for whom not physically showing up isn't even a f*****g option


one day we'll look back on how we handled a pandemic like this and we'll tell ourselves "well, we couldn't do very much more about it, because it would have cost too much". so basically as a society we've been reduced to saying "we could have done something but chose not to, because of money". the fallout over this virus is only a microcosm of what climate change will have to offer, and we have the means, technology and willingness (among MOST people) to fight it but choose not to...because of the cost.

money isn't going to mean s**t in the end but it's all some people seem to want to focus on.

money is why we don't have universal health coverage (hOW aRe YoU gOnNA paY FOr iT?!?!) and the lack of that is why i think the US is going to be among the worst hit of all so-called developed nations

Were you able to obtain some hand sanitizer? You can carry it around in a small bottle and use as needed. Or make your own.

I'm wondering if what I've read recently, that no one under the age of 19 has died from Corona virus at this point is correct?

Ultimately, unless a person is living the life of a hermit and completely "off grid", self sufficient and in a remote area, I sadly think most everyone will contract this virus within the year. Even if communities, states and even countries isolate, the virus won't die out at this point. So a country isolates for a time and then when the isolation stops, new infections are introduced into that same country. I'm not going to throw caution to the wind , because I'm a husband, income supplier and father, but I wonder if there really isn't an escape at some point I'll be forced to just roll the dice and see if I survive.

Teenagers, and younger, don't have much to fear over the virus.
People over the age of 50 do.
Perhaps they want to cull the herd of baby boomers?

kraftie if you could get your hands on a couple of N-95 face mask, you could have a plan. Generally speaking these mask are designed as one-time-use items. But is that really true?

These N95 mask are also used to block smoke and haze from forest/brush fires which are also extremely small particles. UC Berkeley professors of environmental health sciences, Katharine Hammond and John Balmes discussed the reuse of N95 mask in the following article. These masks are designed for workers exposed to fine particulate dusts on the job for a whole eight-hour work shift. At the end of such a shift, the masks are typically dirty and sweaty, but not if one only uses the mask intermittently when one goes outdoors in bad air. My wife has asthma and she has experienced exacerbations secondary to wildfire smoke in the past. She wears her N95 mask religiously but keeps them for many days or even weeks. It is a waste to discard them after intermittent use.

So if you intermittently use these masks during times of greatest exposure (such as on subway rides), they may last you for a long time.

Now I am not talking about the surgical mask or construction mask but those with the actual ability to filter out these small coronaviruses, the N95's/N100's etc.

Right, these teenagers will survive but those that become infected will bring this virus back with them and spread it to their parents, grandparents, teachers, and the neighbor next door.

That's also the case with influenza, pnumonia and I'm sure several other illnesses.

A similar scenario exists on a much larger scale: If schools across the U.S. remain open, then young students will bring back the virus to their parents, grandparents and neighbors.

I don't think containment is possible at all any longer. Even so, I don't think giving up and just "letting the chips fall where they may" is a good idea. I think taking measures to minimize the spread will result in delaying the inevitable (virtually everyone getting it at some point) which will ease the burden on hospitals and hopefully prevent stacks of bodies.

Saturate the mask with sanitiser lotion on a regular basis.
I have a cloth facemask that can be washed and sterilised.
I really don't see what the problem is.

If worst comes to worst and you can't get a facemask, use a scarf, FFS.
It ain't rocket surgery.
Not a perfect seal, but it is more about not putting your hands/fingers to your face.
I hear the bandito look is back in fashion.

Much to do about nothing, in my book.


Also, consider:
Use gloves to remind yourself not to touch your face.
Always carry a walking stick and use it to push people away, where it can be applied, if they are ignorant about the 1-metre separation rule. <joking about the pushing bit, not the 1-metre rule >
When in public, consider a little bit of sanitising lotion up the nostrils.
It may dry out the skin with constant use, but don't use it constantly, d'uh!

That is true also. So perhaps the world is panicking over something we experience all the time. You get old and die or perhaps you get old, become more vulnerable to infections and die. The media has a habit of blowing things out of proportion. Maybe they expect us to live forever.

A great way to stop their parents/grand-parents from spending their inheritance.
And they say kids are dumb.
