When I was a kid and got a cold the first thing my folks did was to make one take a swig of whiskey and hold it in your throat, gargle with it.
Good moonshine, not store bought will kill germs. If it lights and burns you know it’s strong enough to run a car on.
People make tonics with it,add ginseng and yellow root(golden seal),let it steep for a week, swig as needed.I regularly take it and poke berries to stay well.Haven't had the flu in over 15 years.

Hand Sanitizer is made using two parts of 99% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) to one part aloe vera gel. When you rub hand sanitizer gel on your hands it evaporates away very quickly.

How Dangerous Is It to Consume Rubbing Alcohol?
When it comes to drinking rubbing alcohol, the digestive tract suffers the most, even when only swallowing a small amount. The body metabolizes these extremely high alcohol levels into acetone. If consumed to intoxication, the substance can lead to organ damage. Because it's a central nervous system depressant, side effects can include dizziness, headaches and inebriation. Because it's a gastrointestinal irritant, it can cause nausea, abdominal pain and vomiting blood. In addition, "due to having a higher molecular weight than ethanol, isopropanol, is more intoxicating than ethanol and can produce an altered sensorium, hypotension, hypothermia, and even cardiopulmonary collapse. Hypotension is associated with severe overdose and related to a mortality rate of nearly 45 percent," according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).

Symptoms of isopropyl alcohol poisoning include:
Slurred speech
Stumbling
Sedation
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Dehydration
Low blood pressure
Headaches
Dizziness
Difficulty breathing/pulmonary swelling (due to the excessive fluid in the lungs, leading to inflammation)
Severe abdominal pains
Shock and respiratory failure
Bleeding in the stomach and intestines
Internal burning
Psuedo-renal failure/bladder rupture
Coma
Organ damage
Death

So there is a need to be a little cautious with this approach.

Cuomo Announces 1-Mile ‘Containment Area’ In New Rochelle, Closes Large Gathering Places There For 2 Weeks

Quote:
New York officials have announced “dramatic action” in their efforts to combat the spread of coronavirus.

Recognizing that New Rochelle has been particularly hard hit and problematic in terms of the spread of the virus, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday that officials are implementing a one mile radius “containment area” there.

“It is a dramatic action, but it is the largest cluster in the country, and this is literally a matter of life and death,” Cuomo said.

Within the containment area in New Rochelle, large gathering places will be closed for two weeks, officials said. That includes schools, temples, churches, and the like, officials said.

“New Rochelle is a particular problem. It is what they call a cluster. The numbers have been going up. The numbers continue to go up. The numbers are going up unabated. And we do need a special public health strategy for New Rochelle,” Cuomo said.

A temporary coronavirus testing facility will be set up within the containment area, Cuomo said.

“We are also going to use the National Guard in the containment area to deliver food to homes, to help with the cleaning of public spaces,” Cuomo said.

“We have moved from a containment strategy to more of a mitigation strategy,” New York Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker said. “When you’re dealing with mitigation, you have to deal with the issues of social distancing and how people gather together and to try to minimize that.”

This will be a period of disruption for the community. I understand that,” Cuomo said. “I get it. This can’t be a political decision. This is a public health decision. It’s not a decision I’m making. I’m accepting the recommendation of Dr. Zucker. In a situation like this, whether you’re president, mayor, the governor: Let the experts decide, and let the science drive the decision. When you politically interfere in science, that’s when you tend to make a mistake.”

It’s major gathering places… just large facilities that do large gatherings,” Cuomo said. “Those facilities that would bring large numbers of people together can’t do it for two weeks.”

The restriction won’t cover smaller businesses and grocery stores, officials said.

Cuomo said the situation was “unique in the United States of America.”

“We haven’t seen this anywhere else. I mean, just think about it. New Rochelle has more than double the number of cases as New York City. It’s true, it’s a phenomenon,” Cuomo said.

While students are home please remember not to congregate unnecessarily. Keep safe and have students work on educational materials provided to you,” Superintendent of New Rochelle schools Dr. Laura Feijoo wrote in a letter to parents. “We must make these two weeks count instructionally and ensure students are learning and engaged while we deal with this worldwide crisis.”

The school system says it will distribute Chromebooks to students who do not have a computer at home

Harvard Asks Students Not to Return After Spring Break Amid Coronavirus Concerns MIT, Boston University and Amherst College have also announced plans amid the COVID-19 outbreak
Quote:
Harvard University on Tuesday said it would move to remote instruction and ask students not to return from spring break later this month amid the global outbreak of COVID-19.

Harvard president Lawrence Bacow said students had been asked not to return to school after spring break, which concludes on March 22, instead of completing coursework remotely.

"After spring break, we've been asked not to come back to campus until further notice. And that all of our academics will be continued with Zoom, Harvard student Benton Niggel explained.

Zoom is the online conferencing software that students will use to remain on campus in order to prepare for "severely limited on-campus activities" and interactions, Bacow said.

"The decision to move to virtual instruction was not made lightly," Bacow said in a letter to the school community. "The goal of these changes is to minimize the need to gather in large groups and spend prolonged time in close proximity with each other in spaces such as classrooms, dining halls, and residential buildings."

The school is also strongly discouraging gatherings of more than 25 people.

Students who live out of state are scrambling.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology announced classes with more than 150 students — about 20 classes — would be taught online starting Tuesday. Events at the campus in Cambridge have also been canceled or postponed through May 15.

Amherst College announced late Monday that classes will be taught remotely after spring break ends on March 23.

Boston University University announced it was developing a remote teaching readiness plan in the event that it to has to shut its doors and continue classes online.

Ohio State suspending in-person classes as virus spreads
Quote:
Ohio State University has canceled in-person classes until March 30 in an attempt to stem the spread of coronavirus on its campus.

The university also suspended all university-sponsored international travel until April 20, The Columbus Dispatch reports.

The decision came Monday night after Ohio reported its first three confirmed cases of the virus, which is formally known as COVID-19.

“We are being proactive in an effort to prevent illness and continue the important work of the university,” OSU President Michael V. Drake said in email to students and faculty.

“I understand that our policy guidelines will cause measurable disruption, but the risk of not acting outweighs the inconvenience of these temporary measures. The safety of our campus community is always our top priority," he added.

Drake also said that there currently were no university-related coronavirus cases, according to the Dispatch.

MLB, NBA, NHL, MLS restrict media access
Quote:
Major League Baseball will join the NBA and NHL in closing clubhouses to media due to fear over potential spread of coronavirus, sources tell ESPN.

After a conference call with owners Monday evening, MLB remains committed to playing the remainder of the slate of spring-training games as well as opening the regular season on time, sources tell ESPN. That plan, like so many, is contingent on how the coronavirus spreads.

MLB plans to monitor local markets and remain nimble if local health authorities recommend games not be played. One option, sources said, is for teams to play games at different locations outside of their metropolitan areas.

Regarding the media restrictions: Players will be available in press-conference settings as well as outside the clubhouse, though during interviews they will be asked to abide by the CDC suggestion that they keep a 6-foot distance from reporters, sources told ESPN.

After consultation with infectious disease and public health experts, and given the issues that can be associated with close contact in pre- and post-game settings, all team locker rooms and clubhouses will be open only to players and essential employees of teams and team facilities until further notice. Media access will be maintained in designated locations outside of the locker room and clubhouse setting. These changes will be effective beginning with tomorrow’s games and practices.

“We will continue to closely monitor this situation and take any further steps necessary to maintain a safe and welcoming environment.”

Does anyone know when corvid-19 started? I am guessing in January 2019? Is there a more precise date? Is there a patient zero?

Do we know who patient zero is in the SARS-CoViD-19 corona virus outbreak that started in China?

Short Answer: No.

Longer Answer: Chinese authorities originally reported that the first corona virus case was on 31 December and many of the first cases of the pneumonia-like infection were immediately connected to a seafood and animal market in Wuhan, in the Hubei province. This connection is tenuous, at best.

Are you saying that Dec 31 of nineteen was the first reported case?

No. The Chinese authorities originally did.

According to Dr Paweł Grzesiowski from the Medical Centre of Postgraduate Education in Warsaw, Poland, the first person infected with the SARS-CoViD-19 appears to have caught it elsewhere.

He said: "What is interesting, is that Patient X, that is, the first -- as it is suspected -- to be infected with this microorganism at the beginning of December 2019, did not have any contact with the fish market where the infection could have occurred."

Again, this information is inconclusive, as the patient mentioned is only suspected of being Patient Zero, and mere suspicion proves nothing.

Oh, ok, I didn't know how long out of 2019 it had been going on before I heard about it all over the news this year.

It is interesting what you can stumble upon when you search for something. I thought I would do a digital search for Patient X for COVID-19 and stumbled upon the World Health Organization plans for home care for patients suspected of being infected with the COVID-19 coronavirus.

The document is in PDF format and can be downloaded here: Home care for patients with suspected novel coronavirus (nCoV) infection presenting with mild symptoms and management of contacts

So what do you do if you are sheltering in place and a member of your family/group comes down with the coronavirus. This can be looked at as a master document or planning guideline.

WHO releases situation reports periodically. This is Situation Report - 41 of 01 March 2020 This report goes on to state:

A majority of patients with COVID-19 are adults. Among 44 672 patients in China with confirmed infection, 2.1% were below the age of 20. The most commonly reported symptoms included fever, dry cough, and shortness of breath, and most patients (80%) experienced mild illness. Approximately 14% experienced severe disease and 5% were critically ill. Early reports suggest that illness severity is associated with age (>60 years old) and co-morbid disease.

Oxygen therapy is the major treatment intervention for patients with severe COVID-19. All countries should work to optimize the availability of pulse oximeters and medical oxygen systems. Mortality in those with critical illness has been reported as over 50%, thus implementation of proven critical care interventions such as lung protective ventilation should be optimized.

Pulse oximeters have become common in the modern world. Just as thermometers measure your temperature. Pulse oximeters clamp onto your fingertip and measure the oxygen in your blood. They are available on Amazon for under $20.

Image

The pulse oximeter, or Pulse Ox, is an electronic device that measures the saturation of oxygen carried in your red blood cells. The device uses a cold light source that shines a light through the fingertip, making the tip appear to be red. By analyzing the light from the light source that passes through the finger, the device is able to determine the percentage of oxygen in the red blood cell.

If you are wearing dark fingernail polish, long, artificial nails or if your fingers are not clean, the pulse oximeter may not work properly.

Why might this simple electronic device be useful when sheltering at home. Normal pulse oximeter levels should be 96% or higher. A reading below 90% indicates hypoxemia—a condition in which there is a deficiency of oxygen in the blood associated with severe pneumonia. Most individuals that die from this coronavirus infection are dying because they contract pneumonia and that is what kills them. Therefore this gives a quick quantitative assessment of imminent danger (pneumonia) and when to rush someone to the hospital.

People reportedly were drinking bootleg alcohol made from methanol, which is found in antifreeze, solvent and fuel, in a failed attempt to prevent infection. That kind is far more toxic than ethanol, the kind of alcohol safe to drink.

When grains are fermented to make ethyl alcohol (drinking alcohol), there is always a portion of methanol produced. Methanol is referred to as wood alcohol as it can be produced using fermented cellulose from wood. During the distillation process for grain alcohol, methanol will come off of the still first due to its smaller size compared to ethyl alcohol. People who drink this fraction go blind and then die (depending upon how much they consume). Those who are new to bootlegging are the most likely victims. This was a common problem during the prohibition era (1919 to 1930s) of the US.

Methanol goes to the retinas first where it becomes oxidized to formaldehyde, then formic acid. Formic acid is the sting in ant bites. Imagine having a million ants bite your eyes at the same time and that is close to what it would feel like to go blind by drinking methanol. After the initial methanol has been oxidized, the rest becomes oxidized by other organs in the digestive tract (leading to death). It is very painful as the victim feels the formic acid attack over the whole body.

It only takes a tea spoon full of methanol to blind a person, two will send them to their grave. Not a fun way to die.
