I don't see what is so "strategic" about causing terror if you don't even reveal who people should be terrified of.

This may have simply been a prank.

From their look and the nature of their target I was thinking it was related to Islamic terrorism. My guess on nationality was not directly Middle Eastern, but perhaps Baltic (ie Bosnian, Croatian) like the Fort Dix 6 were.

AP news sources are now reporting they are Russian from the Chechnya Region, and have been in the US for at least one year. Chechnya which is primarily Islamic has been waging on and off civil war against Russia for many years.

Chechen globetrotters make sense.

They've been pretty much everywhere "the Jihad" has been going on.

A couple of people have kept an entire country on edge for several days. That's about as strategic as you can get in regards to a "win".

What win? Life goes on in Boston and Charley still rides the MBTA.

A "win"? What game are we playing? You're making it sound like the culprits were performance artists or something. I don't buy it.

They basically committed suicide - they must have had some reason. Either they were angry (in which case they weren't playing a "game" at all), or they wanted to promote a cause (in which case it's a bit odd that nobody has owned up to the attack), or they thought that they could destabilise an entire country with a couple of pressure cookers (in which case they were delusional).

There's a reason that bin Laden claimed responsibility for 9/11. That was the whole point.

It has been confirmed the two bombers are of ethnic Chechnyan origin & have lived/attended schools in the US for several years. They appear to be from Kyrgyzstan initially and then later Dagestan which is next to Chechnya, an area increasingly involved in the Chechan affairs.

Once the second brother is apprehended, the question becomes if they acted independantly or had outside influence/assistance. It is reported at least one brother spent about a year in the area of Dagestan recently, and if true would have afforded an opportunity for contact with extremists there. They are also looking at internet contacts and there may be some early indications of participation on questionable sites.

The seperatist wars in Chechnya (v Russia) were more characterizied by nationalistic then religious aims, but since having to go underground with Russias reasertion of control (and installation of a Russia-friendly governor), the movement has taken on very severe terroristic tactics and hostage taking, including attacks on a Theatre, Subways and most notoriously the School at Breslan, where about 300 children and school staffed ultimately died. The attacks were gaining such negative reactions that a leader or the seperatist movement announced they were moving away from civilian targets to military ones a few years back.

It is possible that the movement now forced underground in an attempt to regain strength has made contact and networked with other terror using islamic groups. Some indication of this happening is I believe already known, though not to what extent.

It is likely that more information will be forthcoming. My own suspicion at this time is that the two brothers would naturally reach out to like minded people at some point and likely were at least influenced by the online supporters of these movements and probably used web based instructions to build their bombs. The more important question of whether any others knew or assisted with the plot remains to be seen, for then it does not stop with the two brothers.

One of the brothers was either married or had a girlfriend, and a child. He had everything to live for - the schmuck.

Boris Yeltsin's legacy. When the general who blew up parliament for him told him that blowing up Chechnya would guarantee his re-election, he went ahead with that... Yeltsin, the worst leader of the last 100 years anywhere on Earth.

Well, at least his family thought even before the bombing that they were way out there, in that they'd kneel and pray - what is it(?) - three times a day.

These bombers truly live up to the "too dumb to live" trope. They had a three day advantage over the FBI and the general public. In those three days they could've gotten a flight out of the country. No one would've been wiser. Instead they just chilled out where they were at and went about their usual business until they decided to do a carjacking.

The second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing has been taken into custody and is alive. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was bleeding badly when he was found, and was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in serious condition.
