But why would this be a concern if the class is taught by a woman experienced in combat?
I have female relatives that are experienced, are you saying that because you are a man you know more about self defense?
No, what I'm saying is that men are on average stronger than women, stronger in different ways (upper body strength specifically), and are possessed of a different mindset, and that if you wish to counter those things you need to train against them, which requires coed instruction. I'll give you a personal example. I train in a variety of martial arts, and know how to apply a number of different holds and locks that use leverage and body mechanics against the person the lock is being applied to in order to control or hurt them, and practice them extensively in training. I used to work with a guy that wrestled, but also took steroids and was much, much stronger than me. Despite my better technique and practice, I could not get a lock to hold on him even if he let me apply it all the way before he started to resist, because he was literally that much stronger than me; if I'd had to fight him for real, I would have had to use a completely different technique because any kind of grappling simply would not have worked on him. Bringing the example back to women's self defense, if you're practicing your techniques on people who are on average not as strong as who you're afraid of, you're running the risk of getting a false sense of security out of something that may not actually work when it matters. That's all I'm getting at.
