Does Trump have the authority to do this unilaterally on the basis of a war powers document, or is it disputable and going to get stuck in the US court system until it’s rendered a moot point by the end of the pandemic?

The act requires companies it’s used on dedicated all production to the USA, once the government gets it trump very wELL could send some to Canada, but the left is jumping to conclusions before anything even happens. Trump can’t rewrite USA law. He can only use the laws as they aren’t written. As I’ve stated this law isn’t intended for pandemics, this isn’t trump being like “ hey 3m we f*****g hate Canada so don’t send them any mask ok” that the left is making it out to be. So be mad at the leftist here on wp who demanded along with democrats politicians that trump use the war act. Course they were mad and would be mad and found another way to spin it if he hadn’t used the war act.
If I was trump I’d probably killed myself by now, he can’t do anything without them coming after him.
Course if I was him I’d reply all the press conferences of them demanding he use the act and be like look f*****s you demanded I use it and this is what happens, so this is on you not me.

Trump uses production act

“How dare he do that”

I suppose he has a right to use the Defence Production Act, but he has to realise its implications.

He imports medical aid from other countries and there will be trade repercussions against America.

Perhaps India has a Defence Production Act too, and they need to protect their citizens.

It's their right as much as his.

Trump blacklisted Indian medication imports many years ago, but now he's begging for it ... while he screws Canada.

Epic fail.

It was the left and many here who demanded he use it.
The act requires companies make good for the USA war effort. Nit allied war effort not Canadians war effort, the USA war effort, which means said companies ordered by the act have ri make good for and only for the USA. It was meant to get weapons and supplies to USA troops during a bad war, not provide supplies for a global pandemic. Perhaps this is partly why he didn’t want to use the act.
The fact they won’t sleep Canadians mask isn’t a trump call it’s the side effect of using a law that was never designed to be used in this way. Think world war 2. Bet ford wasn’t selling tanks and cars to Canada directly , nope they couldn’t under this act, All production went to the USA government, who then chose to send aid to allied nations. Trump may and can send aid to Canada from this supPly when we can.

This isn’t trump being like hey don’t give Canada stuff. This is trump basically nationalizing companies under a war act.

So blame the democrats, blame cnn, blame the leftist here who all called and pushed and pushed for trump to use this law.

India can do what they want. They too busy trying to cover up the spread and punish anyone who tries to get people tested though. Like China they learn the hard way.

Thing is you won’t seem to comprehend that the USA is going to learn the hard way that they, too, are dependant on international trade like everyone else.

trump wants to go it alone? Be careful what you wish for. Just wait until the whole world tells the USA to f**k off when they want to buy something from them and instead everyone else trades
with each other and helps each other out with food, medicine, PPE etc and tells America to shove it.

Like I said, the world will Not soon forget this day and this single traded item - N95’s - is going to influence America’s global trade for generations.

Quoting to stress to severity of America’s actions worldwide.

So maybe you need to make a China won’t give Canada masks thread

Except Canada gave China masks early on and China has already reciprocated sending some PPE to Canada and guaranteed will sell us more. That’s because our federal government knows better than to bite the hand that feeds & opted to maintain a good trading relationship with our partner, China. Canada will do Okay with international trade now and in the future because we didn’t elect some “Canada first,” windbag to tell them to f**k off. We’re smarter than that.

Really then what’s this?

Also the USA is been giving out aid to Italy and China. The USA is always the go to for aid whenever stuff happens other places. The hospital ship sent to nyc was delayed as it needed repairs after being rushed back from a aid mission to country in South America.

I’d wager the USA spends way more then Canada on aid to foreign nations every year.

Why isn’t Canada giving stimulus to people on disability?
The USA government is. If Canada is so great why aren’t they helping the poorest amongst them? Why’s the aid only go to working middle class ? Where’s the 2 trillion dollar Canada aid package? There isn’t one? Just a corporate bail out ?
Seems Canada isn’t so great after all.

1) The USA IS THE REASON many countries even need aid. USA physically bombs them or economically plunders them and then throws them an aid lifeline to keep them just alive enough to exploit.

2) Canada is doing right by its poor people. Know what they’re getting? $2,000.00/month, tax free, for 15 weeks - for starters. 4 Million Canadians, 10% or so of our population, are getting this. What are Americans getting in their $2 Trillion corporate bailout? A measly $1200 per person from a spending bill that equates to $18,000.00 per person - the rest is all going to corporate welfare. Please, feel free to tell me again how the USA is doing better by their poor people in this crisis than Canada.

3). Also, Canadians receive free health care to see their doctor for a diagnosis or to be tested. Their entire hospital stay and treatment is free, including respiratory therapy, use of a ventilator, coordination of care with other medical specialists or departments, and life support if needed. Forgive me if I'm wrong but don't many Americans who get $1200 in aid need to pay out pocket for their doctor visits and hospitalisation? It seems many can't afford to get diagnosed let alone treated, which is why many uninsured Americans are dying. I'm not trying to criticise Americans but I feel disgusted that their $1200 in "emergency aid" doesn't even cover the cost of one day in ER.

Most poor Americans get Medicaid. That would pay for all hospitalizations. People on disability are automatically on Medicaid.

Most of the uninsured are lower-middle class working people whose family income, depending on the state, is from just above the federal poverty level to about 3 times the federal poverty level.

Certain states, like California and Massachusetts, have very few actually uninsured people. Some states are way worse off.

The main problem is that most people have to pay about 20% out of pocket, which might put them into medical debt.

1) We don’t get “free,” healthcare. We all pay for it via taxes. We just don’t pay out of pocket when we go, and as a result we pay less on average than Americans for similar care and are all covered by our Provincial insurance policies. But my point is it isn’t FREE, we just pay less for it at a different time vs paying more out of pocket at time of services rendered.

2) Correct. Uninsured Americans are more likely to be allowed to die than receive medical treatment. This will likely play out many thousands of times before this pandemic is over. $1200 won’t cover C-19 treatment, nooo, it’d fall tens of thousands of dollars short.

Uninsured people are not refused treatment.

They get massive medical bills, though.

20% of a coronavirus diagnosis and hospital treatment would be well over $1200. So, many Americans are likely forced to forgo testing or medical care. That's terrifying to me. There are probably millions of people trying to self-medicate and also raise their kids, buy toilet paper, and keep a roof over their heads. I hate inequality so it stresses me even more that some states are "worse off" than others. The $1200 sounds like a pittance compared to what some people require, for medical treatment alone -- not to mention an economic stimulus or to replace a job that they've lost.

So then why was that 17 year old in California refused treatment for being uninsured and then later died?

Fact is, uninsured are refused treatment.

Alternatively what we will see is prioritization of treatment from the wealthiest and best insured down to the least and uninsured.

I heard that 17 year-old Americans don't get any stimulus money, but 16 and 18 year-olds do.

Sixteen because they are children, and eighteen because they're adults. What's up with that? Does anyone know?

Hmm.. If only the USA had a presidential candidate running on a platform of equality and healthcare for all and living wages.. if only Americans had the option of electing a leader who would do right by citizens instead of corporations.. hmm, if only, eh?

I would say that most Americans, outside of various hotspots, probably don’t have the virus....especially if they haven’t ventured into those hotspots. We’ll see how this pans out over the next month or so.

Most American states have less than a 10% rate of positive tests for coronavirus. Tests are usually free.

The New York area, Michigan, and Louisiana are the hotspots.

He wasn’t refused treatment. He was referred to an emergency room. He died on his way to the emergency room.

And the DNC is working hard to ensure that candidate doesn't become their nominee, because why would they want a candidate that inspires enthusiasm? That might lead to victory and the Washington Generals aren't supposed to win.

By law, no one can be refused treatment in an emergency room.

Uninsured people are probably treated shoddily....and that could cause deaths.
