Along with Broadway going dark, classic music fans will be shut out, too, as the New York Philharmonic announced today that it has canceled all of its concerts immediately and through March 31. “As always, the safety and security of our guests, musicians and employees is a priority,” the organization stated.

Both the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall have canceled all performances scheduled through March 31 (the Met's plan takes effect immediately, the latter will still hold events March 12).

The Met's decision affects performances of all six operas presented at the house over the next few weeks, including the new production of Der Fliegender Holländer, which was slated to be broadcast live in movie theatres globally March 14.

Among the slate of programs scheduled at Carnegie Hall were performances from the San Francisco Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the New York Pops.

Both organizations will work with patrons to arrange refunds, and in the case of the Met, exchanges for future performances. Those who purchased tickets from third parties are instructed to contact their point of purchase.

Across the country, producers and theatre owners are shutting down or altering their performance methods to aid in efforts to contain the rapidly spreading coronavirus. In San Francisco, performances of Hamilton and The Last Ship were canceled fully, while the city's engagement of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has reduced its capacity in response to mandates on mass gatherings.

Major League Baseball will suspend operations for the next four weeks, including spring training and the first two weeks of the regular season in response to the spread of coronavirus, the league announced Thursday. The MLB season was originally set to start March 26, but Opening Day will now occur no earlier than April 9. MLB is the fourth major American pro sports league to suspend its season due to the outbreak of COVID-19, joining the NBA, NHL and MLS.

The decision comes after the league's owners discussed plans on a conference call Thursday afternoon. MLB ceased operations at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday, but spring training games were played as scheduled in Florida on Thursday afternoon with fans in attendance.

Minor League Baseball also announced the start of its season would be delayed, and MLB said that qualifying for the World Baseball Classic was postponed indefinitely.

Following a call with the 30 Clubs, and after consultation with the Major League Baseball Players Association, Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. today announced that MLB has decided to suspend Spring Training games and to delay the start of the 2020 regular season by at least two weeks due to the national emergency created by the coronavirus pandemic. This action is being taken in the interests of the safety and well-being of our players, Clubs and our millions of loyal fans.

MLB will continue to evaluate ongoing events leading up to the start of the season. Guidance related to daily operations and workouts will be relayed to Clubs in the coming days. As of 4:00 p.m. (ET) today, forthcoming Spring Training games have been cancelled, and 2020 World Baseball Classic Qualifier games in Tucson, Arizona have been postponed indefinitely.

MLB and the Clubs have been preparing a variety of contingency plans regarding the 2020 regular season schedule. MLB will announce the effects on the schedule at an appropriate time and will remain flexible as events warrant, with the hope of resuming normal operations as soon as possible.

Here are five other things to know about MLB's decision.

1. Spring training suspended
Both the Grapefruit and Cactus League schedules will be suspended beginning Thursday afternoon. MLB's release also refers to the schedules as being "canceled," though it would stand to reason that some kind of ramp-up period will be in place ahead of the regular season. Obviously it's too early in the process to know exactly how that process would work.

2. Season will begin late
The current hope on MLB's side is that the league will miss out on only the first two weeks of the season, which was set to begin on March 26. It's unclear if that's a realistic desire, and it's at least possible that more time will be required before normal business can be resumed.

It's also unclear how MLB would approach the season, regardless of when it comes. Presumably all options will be on the table, including shortening the season, tacking games on afterward, or even playing doubleheaders to make up for lost time. Teams would have about 150 games on their regular season schedules if play started April 9 and no games were made up.

3. Suspension occurred during games
One of the oddest aspects of MLB's announcement is that it came while teams were playing games in Florida. Despite the NBA making its call last night, MLB did not cancel Thursday afternoon Grapefruit League contests that started in the early afternoon. As for the Cactus League, most of those games had already been canceled due to rain.

After the NBA suspended the remainder of its 2019-2020 season due to the coronavirus, the NHL followed suit and suspended its current season on Thursday.

In a statement from league commissioner Gary Bettman, the league announced that it would halt the season as a safety precaution, beginning with Thursday night's games.

"The NHL has been attempting to follow the mandates of health experts and local authorities, while preparing for any possible developments without taking premature or unnecessary measures," Bettman said. "However, following last night's news that an NBA has tested positive for coronavirus—and given that our leagues share so many facilities and locker rooms and it now seems likely that some member of the NHL community would test positive at some point—it is no longer appropriate to try to continue to play games at this time."

Bettman's statement continued: "Our goal is to resume play as soon as it is appropriate and prudent, so that we will be able to complete the season and award the Stanley Cup. Until then, we thank NHL fans for your patience and hope you stay healthy."

Before deciding to put the season on hold, the NHL advised teams to not hold practices or meetings on Thursday.

"Given the uncertainty regarding next steps regarding the coronavirus, Clubs are advised not to conduct morning skates, practices or team meetings today," NHL Public Relations said in a tweet

The MLS has suspended its current season for 30 days due to the coronavirus.

"Major League Soccer has suspended match play for 30 days, effective immediately, as the league continues to assess the impact of COVID-19 with its medical task force and public health officials," the league said in a statement. "At the appropriate time, the league and clubs will communicate plans for the continuation of the 2020 season and update the status of league events."

The statement included a comment from MLS Commissioner Don Garber. "Our clubs were united today in the decision to temporarily suspend our season—based on the advice and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), and other public health authorities, and in the best interest of our fans, players, officials and employees," Garber said. "We'd like to thank our fans for their continued support during this challenging time."

The MLS' decision also came a day after the league decided to postpone a match between the Seattle Sounders and San Jose Earthquakes, following Santa Clara County and the state of Washington banning gatherings of 1,000 or more people and putting restrictions on gatherings of more than 250 people, respectively.

"The league and its clubs are evaluating the options for rescheduling the matches at a later date," the league said in a statement on Wednesday. The MLS also said it was taking measures to keep fans, players and staff same from the virus.
