Yes, that's right i'm making another post about gay penguins. :P This time it's penguins in germany.

http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2009/06/0 ... pt005.html

Quote:
Keepers at Germany's Bremerhaven zoo couldn't get two penguin parents to take care of their egg, so they're trying an experiment — they gave the egg to a gay male penguin couple.

The biological parents "always rolled the egg out of their nest, they kicked it out again and again," zoo veterinarian Joachim Schoene said.

"Then we made the decision not to give it up and instead try to give it two fathers."

So far, the experiment has been a success. The two foster dads incubated the egg for 30 days until it hatched and have continued to care for the newborn chick.

The male penguins, named Z and Vielpunkt, are one of three same-sex pairs of Humboldt penguins at the zoo. That means almost a third of the zoo's 20 penguins who have attempted to mate exhibit homosexual behaviour. Same-sex penguin pairs have also been observed at zoos in Japan and New York.

The behaviour is not considered unusual because homosexuality has been well documented in the animal kingdom.

Scientific observation has shown that most sexual encounters between giraffes are homosexual. Male bottlenose dolphin calves often form homosexual bonds and exhibit bisexual behaviour when they're older. And female Japanese macaques, or snow monkeys, form monogamous relationships with each other that last from days to weeks.

All of these behaviours have been observed in the wild and do not appear to have been influenced by a scarcity of available mates of the opposite sex.

A similar experiment was performed at New York City's Central Park Zoo in 2004. Two male chinstrap penguins named Roy and Silo incubated an egg together and raised the chick, called Tango, when she hatched.

A children's book written about the New York penguins called And Tango Makes Three has been the book with the most requests for removal from libraries in the United States over the past three years, according the American Library Association.

Z, Vielpunkt and their adopted chick have proven a hit with visitors to the Bremerhaven zoo.

Gay penguins? Just when I think there is nothing more ridiculous to read about in my day lol. This is too funny. Not that they're "gay", but the fact that this is somehow newsworthy.

I'm really glad you posted this article. People need to be aware that gayness is present all through the animal kingdom. It is genetic, not a "deviant choice." This is proof that sometimes gay couples can be better parents than straight ones.

Does not matter. The religious people extremists only see what they want to see, they are oblivious to reality and ignore facts staring them right into the face!

And they still wonder why we make fun of their "beliefs" and "scientific" efforts... I've said it before and say it again: Religious belief qualifies as a mental disorder diagnosis in DSM-V.

They fear stuff like homosexuality and think they will "catch it" as if it was an airborne virus. I can tell them that it is not - i've slept in the same room as a gay dude, and i still want to f--k girls.

I agree Ichinin. This is why I stated that this shouldn't even be newsworthy. It shouldn't matter if you're gay or straight. People will always have their own viewpoints on this until the end of time, but in my opinion, sexuality shouldn't be such a hot button issue in this world.

I agree, but the real focus, if sexuality becomes an issue, should be human gay rights first. Why should penguins get it first? Without civil rights for all humans - no matter sexual identity, race, religion, creed, gender, etc. - there will be no rights or equality for animals.

but it isn't having anything to do with that. It has to do with the fact that it's an interesting story, the struggles of gay penguins has been documented a lot recently.

I found this story awsome! My comment on the story is still the second most agreed. It says "Goes to show that homosexuality is a part of nature, and that religion needs to stop meddeling with it."

No one's suggesting gay penguions should get more rights than gay humans, or that gay penguins make better parents (than gay humans? )

The whole point of this being newsworthy is that it's another example of how homosexuality occurs naturally in other species and isn't just some kind of perversion. Shows the religious anti-gay arguments for the BS that they are.

Thanks for posting this story:)

For a fascinating look at homosexuality in the animal world (albeit one biased towards mammals and birds) check out Biological Exhuberance: Animal Homosexuality and Natrual Diversity by Bruce Bagemihl. In a similar vein but with a wider focus is Evolution's Rainbow: Diversity, Gender, and Sexuality in Nature and People by Joan Roughgarden. Both are amazing books.

First off, I only picked Barbarossa's quote because I think it represented what all of you were thinking as a whole.

Second: anyone who is on the fence about homosexuality isn't going to be swayed that much by gay penguins in a zoo. That's just a little too out-of-their-species for them.

Third: The "religious anti-gay arguments" won't accept gay penguins because they are in a zoo, and the right wingnuts will cry out the accusation that the zookeepers are gay or pro-gay rights.
Plus, the arguments are not based on logic, so they will NOT be crushed by logic. The arguments are based on sheer stupidity, homophobia, and repression. Progress can kill the argument, but as we've seen in hate groups, it's hard to extinguish the flames of hate.

Fourth: Anyone (including myself) for gay rights knows that human gay rights are more important than an animals', due to the fact that those same human rights carry down to animals.
