Is that the chain policy or was it just that one store that did it?

I would find it absurd to sue the cooperation than the store if it was only the store that did it and it wasn't something that all Targets do. I think the mom is grieving over her son's loss.

The mom claims that other former employees have told her that this "walk of shame" has happened to them, and that they've witnessed it happen to others...however, the article did not make it clear just how many stores they came from, so whether or not it's a "policy" (unofficial or otherwise) is unclear.

I suspect Target has a "walk of shame" the same way the military has code reds - it's an unofficial policy that would otherwise get management in trouble if it were made generally known.

I also feel for the poor kid. Do they do that to everyone, or just the employees who have disabilities?

f**k Target. First they gave up on the Canadian market, and now there's this. No one deserves to be treated like that, especially not people on the spectrum. I used to get picked on all the time when I was younger, and people would say that they were just joking or just teasing. News flash; I don't take kindly to mean jokes. When people say mean things to me or about me, usually I take it to heart. I can tolerate some mild ribbing, as I've grown used to it, but it's taken me a really long time.

Sad story, but I'm always leery of trying to assign "blame" for a suicide, especially in the legal sense.

When you realize that suicide is the one instance when blaming the victim is appropriate - and nobody wants to do that - the victim's family will often try to find a scapegoat for the victim's final act, especially if there is the possibility of a large financial settlement to be had.

Either way this is one hell of a policy, I personally would not want to experience that without definitive proof of wrongdoing .

If it is just that store I think a lawsuit is in order against that store a 'walk of shame policy' that should not be allowed on principle if its the whole chain then the whole chain should get the lawsuit, there is this saying 'innocent till proven guilty', which means person gets arressted, incident is investigated before said person gets any fine/punishment...I say the store is abusing their position by having such a policy in the first place since like in this case the individual did not end up to have actually stolen anything. Obviously in cases where nothing was stolen that would only serve to cause emotional/mental distress especially in people with disabilities like aspergers(did the store know about that?)

Of course the Mom would be greiving...but I do not think she is wrong for wanting some accontability from either that specific store or the chain of targets if that is a policy across all their stores....in fact if it is all their stores I just may have to boycott them that is just disgusting.

How do you mean blaming the victim is appropriate in cases of suicide? If someone is a victim of harrassment/abuse and other factors that contribute to suicidal feelings how can the possibly be blamed for that. A person can only take so much and how much that is varies among individuals....sure on a technical level the only person that can be blamed for actively ending their life is them as they are the one who chooses and carries out whatever method. But people don't just wake up one day and decide 'hey I'm going to just up and kill myself' there are factors that make people feel that way and much of the time so those factors also share blame especially if those factors are other living beings that knowingly contributed to someones mental/emotional distress and or any kind of physical harrassment/abuse.

I'm surprised that they would have a "walk of shame" practice, officially or unofficially, out of the fear of litigation. My employer and my last one (especially my last one) were absolutely terrified of lawsuits.

I never assign blame to a person for a suicide if they are depressed and get rather irritated at those who do. Instead of trying to blame them for being depressed, what they needed was the proper help to deal with depression.

I would think that someone not in law enforcement putting someone in handcuffs would be a clearly an illegal act of false imprisonment.

Some companies will walk fired or laid off employees out of the building by a uniformed guard or off duty police officer. I've never heard of anyone being put in handcuffs like that, though. They don't do it for some kind of walk of shame but just to make sure that the person doesn't try to act out or retaliate on the way out of the building.

I've even heard of some companies doing that for anyone who resigns. And at some companies, when you give two weeks notice, they will pay you for that two weeks and terminate employment on the spot and escort you from the building.

But putting people in handcuffs is uncalled for.
