I'd buy a environmental link to the severe end of the spectrum. My older son has a few AS traits but does very well in school and has good communication skills. My younger son is way on the other end of the spectrum barely speeks hads long volient meltdown ect. Alex my older son was born in a fairly clean middle class town. Jacob my younger son was born in a year the smoke from a tire fire in Mexico mixed with the smog from Texas due to the deregulation in environmental standers By GW Bush when he was governor of that state that all got caught up in the humidity over Louisiana and cause what they called on the tv news a brown haze. Lots of the women I knew ethier had sick babies that year or 3 tremster miscarriages and still born babies. Do I think Jacob would have had autism even if he was born that year, sure but I also belive he wouldn't have been as baddly effected as he is had he not been born in to that nasty mess.
I'm with you, I think environment most likely affects the severity of presentation. It simply makes sense; it would explain quite a lot when it comes to unanswered questions.
It's also possible there is an environmentally caused condition that mimics autism.
Or a bit of both.
As much as I firmly believe in the genetic explanation, it does not seem to cover all the bases. There must be something else, as well.
And it could be as simple as world that has gotten too overwhelming in almost all aspects. Similar to why allergies are on the rise.
It would be good if someone at least took a scientific look into it. That street may make a good research base.
We've got an autism cluster where I live, as well, but here we all know why we have it: the area is filled with industries that employ a high number of those with Aspergers or several Aspergers traits. By genetics, the kids are going to be on the spectrum.
