A rigorous, not yet published study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found [the autism rate] is now about 1 in 100 by studying health and school records of children in various cities.
Some experts question the validity of the findings, at least in part because autism is a behavioral diagnosis. Dr. Susan E. Levy of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics subcommittee on autism, commented: "As of yet, there's no consistent biologic marker we can use to make the diagnosis of autism."
There is another thread on here but it is quoting FOX as the source and claiming 1 in 91 based on a telephone survey rather than the more rigorous study by the CDC which results in a 1 in 100 rate. I'll try to update this with a link to the publication when it is released.
well, Autism is Autism and does that mean ALL TYPES of Autism all lumped together?
299.00 Autistic Disorder
299.80 Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified
299.80 Asperger's Disorder
299.80 Rett's Disorder
299.10 Childhood Disintegrative Disorder
all of those, or
just Autistic Disorder? I heard that Asperger's is 2 in 10,000 so that would make us part of the 1 in 91, I suppose, but a different flavor, if you please.
