I do NOT agree with sports bodies being able to "fine" players and coaches vast amounts of money.
They are professionals. They are paid for their work.
How would it be if some supervisor in a supermarket could say to some checkout chick, "That customer said you were rude to them so I am fining you three day's pay"
A sportsman yells at the umpire and is fined large amounts of money.
What if the video shows that the ball really was out (or in)?
Have you EVER heard a case where they said to the umpire "You screwed up so we are fining you half your wages"?
Losing three days pay would be a better alternative than losing your job; that's what tends to happen if you aren't performing.
Imagine if a company has a bonus for those who project a professional image and use safe practices in the workplace, but if you violate a rule, you lose part of that bonus. The end result is exactly the same; the only difference is one way is negative punishment (punishment by taking something) and the other is positive punishment (punishment by introducing something).
Also, the "half your wages" part is a pretty bad exaggeration. Rex Ryan has a 4-year, $11.5 million contract. This is $2,875,000 per year. The organization fined him $55,000, which is less than 1/50th of his yearly wages. That's a far cry from 1/2.
