This iz thu stoopedist artikel that I hav evur red.

Thu peepel that promot this hav no nolege ov just how thu langwaj formd. Nor r tha awar ov just wut wud b reqird to chanj spelingz. Thu transishun for peepel that hav alredee lernd wud b insan. Thayr wud be no wa tu rit infleshuns end we wud luz so much fidelitee (fidelity) that r langwaj wud b yusles. difrent peepel wud rit wordz difrent b-cuz tha say them difrent.

(okay, enough of that)

Night is spelled night, because there is a difference in annunciation between nite and night.... Annunciation has been lost in modern society, true, but we need to maintain the ability for it to be used. It gives the language so much more power.
The US has already massacred the english language because of Noah Webster. The word Honour is no longer in their dictionary.

The truth is though, this movement doesn't surprise me. The world is breeding itself into stupidity... And this goes hand in hand... give up what academic tools you have, and return to the basest level you can achieve.

Too and Two ... even if you don't know the word specifically, if you were taught how to read, and with a bit of etymology (ie, the origin of words) then you can figure out which one will mean "also" and which will mean "a pair"
When speaking, context usually tells you. but not in all situtaions.
When writing, the spelling ALWAYS tells you.
under this foolishness, they're both spelled the same way... it's idiotic.
It's also unreasonable, and it's the epitome of both physical and mental laziness.
Why learn? Just learn some sounds and write it however you like.
Unless you introduce deeper level learning to young children, they NEVER learn to think critically.

The reason why people have a problem learning, is because they don't want to learn... they want to be spoon fed, like all the rest of our lives are.... Told what to think, told what to do, told how to feel, told how to act, told when to take a s**t, told when to eat. told when to screw, told when to everything in our lives. Handed to them, so that they don't have to think!

I YAM 2 LA Z 2 LERN. MAYK THUH WURLD EZ UR 4 ME

The reason English has inconsistencies in spelling is because it has evolved from several different root languages, which also gives it variety and subtlety of expression. This variety is a broad palette with which one can paint infinitely complex pictures. Making it entirely phonetic would be pounding a finely crafted tool into a blunt instrument.

They'd still have to think to be able to read and that's what these idiots are complaining about. Spelling makes their brains hurt.

Oh, for Pete's sake! With everything else out there in the world to be picketing over, they waste time and energy on this?

Big words are unfair to stupid kids. :P

I joke, but I would see the matter of amending the English language as being separate from spelling bees anyway. I mean, the real question is just learning in general, not just a silly spelling bee. Everybody knows in real life you use spell-check anyway for most words.

Not actually, no. Spell-check is kind of redundant for me. I'm a former dictionary reader. :nerdy: Spell-check mostly comes in handy when I accidentally use British instead of American spellings, or when I'm dealing with unfamiliar terms.

This wasn't "you" as in specifically you. Rather I just mean people in general use spell check in every day life.

Now dont look at as helping lazy people. look at as ""English is a language that lurks in dark alleys, beats up other languages and rifles through their pockets for spare vocabulary" and is now returning what it took.

Oh, I was just joking about the "stupid people" thing. I just don't think that spelling bees are the biggest issue here. As it stands, I am proud to have a kick-butt language, and it seems that English is doing exactly that by your story. :P Engaging in theft too... but you can't have everything anyway.

In some ways I am a "purist" and hate to see people mangle the English language through ignorance.

On the other hand..... we won. English has become the default world language so if you are brought up speaking Russian or some African tribal language then you only need to learn English to speak to anyone.

So if we are going to inflict our language on billions of people then we should make the spelling and grammar a lot more sensible than it is now.

Did you know all pilots and air traffic controllers must speak English? Otherwise how could a Japanese pilot get instructions to land in Sweden, or a French pilot land in Korea?

The problem isn't the language. The language is versatile, sophisticated, and can be both simple and complex according to the preferences of the user. The problem is the way people learn.

For one, people learn language backwards. Language develops naturally, on its own. Then, people try to classify language and bend it to their will using some sort of arcane system of rules that end up not making any sense. "I before E, except after C" is an excellent example of this. Someone tried to make a rule for it, but ignored the endless exceptions. Yet, people attempt to learn language by the rules, not in a natural way. It's just strikes me as very strange, and dare I say it, loopy.

There's also people that have deeply-rooted mental problems in that they simply don't want to learn. Learning to spell English in a proper manner is very possible, you just have to try. Now, I know this may not the best forum to display such sentiments, but sometimes not being able to something means that you're the one that has a problem, not what you're trying to do.
