This week in England they sent several carloads of police to take down a sixty-something man who was driving his motorized wheelchair down the sidewalk. The wheelchair could only do four kilometers per hour.

He was convicted of "drink driving" and fined but they can't stop him from driving because it doesn't need a licence to drive a wheelchair.

I forget whether it was England or America but a guy saw that his kid had left his bicycle out on the front lawn.
He picked it up and was wheeling (not riding) it towards the garage when the cops came past and thought he looked a bit unsteady.

So they arrested and CONVICTED him for being in charge of a vehicle while intoxicated.

Where i live, drunk driving is drunk driving, even if it is on a mountain bike, at sea or in the air. The modus of transportation is irrelevant.

As for the scooter, I have seen people in motorized scooters do some damage to other pedestrians when they aren't taking care (I mostly work with people with cognitive decline). I have also had the non-pleasure of being hit by an irresponsible bike rider (pedal bike - not a motorcycle).

I personally agree that if you choose to drink to the point of intoxication - stagger home or stagger to a bus or taxi...

Governments will use any excuse to rob or extort citizens of their money.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse? I wouldn't have guessed at this one. How are we supposed to know that a Barbie jeep is a "vehicle" under law? Aha! I've got it - he must sue the Barbie manufacturer - don't forget humiliation, pain & suffering - should be good for at least $1M.

This is worse than the story I read where someone mowing the lawn was arrested for drunk driving because the lawnmower was a little beat up.

Stupid question: does this mean that I cannot drunkenly disport myself *on my private property* whilst on a vehicle?

To clarify: suppose it's my car, and I have a huge front yard, is it illegal for me to drunkenly drive my car on my front lawn? how about my back lawn?

But road rules don't apply to private property.

If a farmer has an old unregistered pickup that he only drives around the farm, that is ok.

If he teaches his 12 year old kid to drive it around the farm then that is ok too.

Correct, at least in Sweden they do not, and if you want to DWI on your own PRIVATE property - go nuts!

My cousin Ben drives a huge truck around the farm. I thought it was technically illegal, but I guess not.

I don't think driving laws come in effect unless you're on public roads. It's the same with being drunk. Public drunkenness is a crime where I live, but as long as you get someone sober to drive you home, and avoid passing out in the middle of Wal-Mart, I think you'll be fine.
