And...they're off and racing! Five weeks of election blitz-advertising, and an election-night TV-athon.

Whoever wins, the new senate won't take effect till the middle of next year: 10 more months of hostile senate if Labor is re-elected; Abbott with effective control of the senate if the Coalition wins.
