Does anyone remember the 'Beslan School Massacre'? I can truthfully say that I don't and I feel extremely bad because this like the first time I ever heard of this. I probably heard people mention it in conversations, but I'm the kind of person that doesn't pay attention if nobody is really talking to me directly :( That might sound selfish to some, and I know, I feel bad . . . I was like, nine?

Well for those of you who haven't heard or just don't really remember that well, I gonna try my best to like summarize it to you. To make a long story short, I copied a whole paragraph from Wikipedia. :L
The Beslan school hostage crisis (also referred to as the Beslan school siege or Beslan massacre) was a three day hostage-taking of over 1,100 people which ended in the deaths of over 300. It began when a group of armed mostly Muslim Ingush and Chechen terrorists took more than 1,100 people (including 777 children) hostage on 1 September 2004, at School Number One (SNO) in the town of Beslan, North Ossetia, an autonomous republic in the North Caucasus region of the Russian Federation. The hostage taking was carried out by a group sent by the Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev, which issued demands of an end to the Second Chechen War. On the third day of the standoff, Russian security forces stormed the building, using tanks, flamethrower rockets, and other heavy weapons. A series of explosions shook the school, followed by a fire which engulfed the building and a chaotic gunbattle between the hostage-takers and Russian security forces. Ultimately, at least 334 hostages were killed, including 186 children; hundreds more were injured and many were reported missing.

i'm old enough to remember when this happened, young grasshopper.......it was such an intense story that all media carried.

there was a similar incident at a theatre, mostly adults, with pretty much the same ending.

the russians have always been fairly ruthless when these things have happened to it's citizens. russian gov't now is much more compassionate than when it was all the soviet union. when people first started hijacking airplanes for political reasons, the soviets were generally left alone. that's because they would never give in to demands. not only would they be sure the hi-jackers were killed, they would kill their family , friends, etc. they would completely wipe all traces of their existence away. if it was state sponsored somehow.....oh my.

the israelis are the same in their fight against hostage taking.

at beslan, i think the goal was to just cause pain to the russians. the attackers knew it was a suicide mission, for sure.

Every one of them believed there were 72 dark eyed virgins waiting in Paradise for each of them.

Thanks for remembering this. I didn't expected to find a topic about Beslan here.
The terrorist have chosen the right day: since this days in Beslan every 1st September - beginning of school year in Russia - is at the same time a day of mourning for many people...
And both incidents, Beslan and so-called "Nord-Ost" (Dubrovka) shows not the best side of how do our government behave...

Thank you for posting this. I will pause and remember this, every year, on September 1st.

There is no reason to mourn for these people, people die and nothing in the present will change that.

Indifference to evil is all that evil needs to thrive.
