Official Title: To amend the Public Health Service Act to combat autism through research, screening, intervention and education.

I don't like the sound of that. Screening and intervention? Why does that sound like a bad thing to me? It sounds way to close to Seek-and-Destroy for me. Now the other two words, research and education, they could be either benevolent or malevolent. Research on 'curing' autism is not a good thing. And education for whom? The autistics or everybody else? And what will be the nature of this education?

It looks like all of the congress in my state supports it. Typical Maryland. Doesn't seem to be out of comittee though.

OK, first off, looking at the house bill, the title seems more threatening than the actual law.

I think the idea of the bill is to coordinate knowledge to be used in Education, Treatment, Diagnosis, and Research. The first thing I noticed in the bill is that the committee which would oversee the implementation of the programs and the designation of the monies would include a person with autims (Alex goes to Washington anyone  ) The second thing I noted is that the bills purpose is to force the states to recognize autism and provide programs for children and adults, particularly in the medical and treatment realm.

We do have to realize that all of use must function as best as possible in the world of NTs. That does not mean we have to change, just adapt. I know it is hard but the quality of life will be so much better.

With that said, I do have one suggestion for an amendment for this bill and it is to define and clarify what Autism really is so that there is no confusion. I think that is the biggest stumbling blocks to services, especially those with AS.

I know that there are quite a few people on this board who hate organizations such as CAN (and I certainly would not accept their stratagy). I however think that the best way to make people see that there are gifts that come along with autism, we need to work with them using their system. I think this bill will help us be able to do that.

Tricky - I don't know. We'll have to see. But, maybe anything which pumps money into this area and raises awareness of the different ways and needs of Autists/Aspies will be a good thing. If others understood more life would be so grand!

I don't know what the Bill is about, but the title of it looks quite menacing.

I find it interesting they want to screen all infants for "Autism" (I wonder if they just mean Kanner's or anything on the Spectrum) by their second birthday, since ASDs seem to first surface in many between ages 2 and 3.

I also find it interesting they want to spend only $4 Million on it. That doesn't seem like enough to have any sort of nationwide program for anything, especially when you've got the same Government that can spend $700 on a toilet seat in charge of it.

Either they're stupid or they'll do a genetic test of some kind.

In order to do a genetic test, they will first have to identify which jeans are related to autism spectrum disorders.

Maybe this will mean that Blue Cross wont dick around with our insurance anymore. I've had them pull out of support for psychiatric counseling because they thought aspergers was temporary.

I don't trust anything the government is involved with right now. Look what's happened to our constitutional rights.
