Pain doesn't usually bother me. Itching does. But swearing doesn't do anything for an itch.

If you have a headache then swearing won't help but when you hit your thumb with a hammer what else are you going to do?

I'm sure the Pope would swear if he spilled hot coffee on his lap.

Makes sense since it releases your frustration, therefore helping you calm down while also allowing you to do something other than focus on the pain.

Categorically and emphatically yes. I just tripped over a power-cable and smashed my foot against the immovable object of the half-ton walnut coffee table and (as I'm currently practising my Unswears for the imminent birth of my new son) I can state that using ersatz swear words just doesn't cut it. "Fiddlesticks" and "Sugar" just can't vocalise what really requires a torrent of abuse that would make a sailor cry.

swearing also works well for emotional pain too...it is the real chicken soup for the soul.

Macbeth...thats when you learn to swear in words that a young child cannot pronounce until they are "old enough" to swear.

example: someone really made you mad...you want to call them a M-F'er...but you can say
that they are a bovine copulator ...works just as well. technicly it is not a swear word by ordinary definitions.
