How stupid. If he had lost the book they might have made him pay it's cost. Probably about five shillings.

I read where some English Lord discovered a book which had been borrowed from the Oxford library 200 years ago by one of his ancestors.

They were amused to get the book back and didn't think of charging him any money.

I'm sure though that here in the UK there is only ever a maximum fine of something like £12 or the price of the missing book...
