Right-Wing Republicans Are on the Verge of Voting to Defund Planned Parenthood

I will paste the first page of text., There are 7 in total so please use the link if you are interested in reading the entire story.

Quote:
This is truly a shocking moment. This Thursday morning, the GOP-controlled House is likely to vote on an Amendment to defund Planned Parenthood. As Cecile Richards explains in this interview below with Democracy Now!'s Amy Goodman, millions of women, men and children who depend on Planned Parenthood would be deprived of basic health care, if the right wing Republicans get their way. This is a decided minority of our country trying to impose their views on all of us.

AMY GOODMAN: We begin Wednesday's show looking at what’s being described as "the most dangerous legislative assault on women’s health" ever. Since taking power in January, the Republican-led House has introduced several major anti-choice bills that women’s rights activists say could place severe limitations on access to reproductive health services. This, despite a campaign pledge to focus on creating jobs. Republican House Speaker John Boehner hailed the proposed legislation.

HOUSE SPEAKER JOHN BOEHNER: A ban on taxpayer funding of abortions is the will of the people, and it ought to be the will of the land. The current law, particularly as enforced by this administration, does not reflect the will of the American people. Last year, we listened to the American people through America Speaking Out. They spoke on this issue loudly and clearly. So we have included it in our pledge, and today we’re making good on that commitment.

Congressman Chris Smith has introduced bipartisan legislation that codifies the Hyde Amendment and other similar policies by permanently applying a ban on taxpayer funding of abortions across all federal programs. This commonsense legislation reflects the will of the people and deserves the support of the House. It’s one of our highest legislative priorities, and as such, I’ve directed that it receive the designation of H.R. 3.

AMY GOODMAN: That was House Speaker John Boehner. As he noted, H.R. 3, called the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act," would cut off public funds for abortions. A second bill, H.R. 358, called the "Protect Life Act," would prohibit federal funds from being used to cover any part of the costs of any health plan that includes coverage of abortion services under the Affordable Care Act. A third bill, H.R. 217, called the "Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act," would deny federal family planning funds to any organizations that perform abortions, regardless of whether or not the organization uses that federal money for abortions.

To discuss the legislation, we’re joined by Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood. Through its affiliates, Planned Parenthood provides family planning, contraception and abortion services at more than 800 health clinics across the country, serving more than three million patients a year.

Cecile Richards, welcome to Democracy Now! Can you talk about what’s happening in Washington, D.C., where you are lobbying Congress?

CECILE RICHARDS: The House leadership in Congress has basically just declared war on women, really from day one. And I know you had that clip there from Speaker Boehner, but it goes much further than that. They not only are now trying to—federal funding hasn’t been available for abortion for more than 30 years, but what they’re really doing is trying to overturn the legal right to abortion in any context. As well, though, it’s way beyond abortion. Now they’re basically trying to end family planning and access to birth control in America. The Republican budget that came out basically gets rid of the nation’s Family Planning Program. And as well, we expect in the next day or two, with the support of the Speaker, there will be an amendment to basically end all federal funds going to Planned Parenthood, including funds that are used for basic birth control, cancer screenings and preventive care for more than three million people every year.

That was just page 1 of 7. Just pasting one in an effort to save space.

at least we're moving in the right direction. I don't want any of my tax dollars going to planned parenthood. if they did I wonder if I could become tax exempt.

I think it may not be the right thing as it is going to affect the most vulnerable.

The GOP has been ideologically against PP for years now. All because they provide abortion services.

Nevermind that only a minority of abortions provided by them use federal funds and the rest are funded privately.
If they want to change it so all abortions by PP are privately covered, then so be it. However defunding the entire organization because of ideological quibbling over details is just cutting services to poor women. Then again, maybe that is the plan all along. Conservatives just can't stand it when their tax money goes to helping people less off than them.

Seriously, I'm not going to support my tax dollars going to the murder of infants.

You may be surprised to read this, but actually, I consider myself pro-life, too. I just find myself holding most of the pro-life movement in contempt. Caring about a baby while it's still in the womb, but allowing it to die from malnutrition or sickness, for some sick notion that making people pull themselves up by their own bootstraps is good for them, makes my stomach churn.
AND...
While I do believe that fetus is a living human being, I also happen to know outlawing abortion won't make it go away. It'll return to what it had once been before abortion was legal - unqualified persons carrying out this medical procedure in unsanitary conditions - or maybe with the pregnant girl/woman taking care of it herself.
Again, I personally don't like abortion, but as it seems it's a situation we'll never rid ourselves of, I'd prefer to keep it, safe, legal..., and rare.

margaret atwood provided a glimpse of what would happen if the rightists weren't stopped in time, in her novel "the handmaid's tale."

No, that's probably more of what the left would do or radical Islam, some nutcase cult. Conservatives wouldn't stand for what is seen in Atwood's novel.

Reasons being:
1. Tyranical Government is the complete antithesis of everything Conservatives stand for.
2. Conservatives were probably the people that tried to stand up to said tyranical government.
3. Conservatives are Pro-Second amendment for a reason to prevent that kind of tyranny from being able to stay in power.

Seriously auntblabby, a lot of my generation is missing due to abortions, a lot of my sister's generation is missing. Were you taught to hate Conservatives in the public schools you went to as a kid or something, because you are not sounding rational.

Will planned parenthood even be effected by this? How much of their budget is from the government? Is there a chance it could be made up by donations? They could probably set up an Internet campaign and use pay pal to funnel that money back to the organization.

Supposedly 1/3 of Planned Parenthood's budget comes from the Federal Government. This plan to cut their funding is the direct result of a undercover sting that caught their employees trying to help a pimp get underage kids abortions without the authorities being called in to bust the pimp.

They were notified after the report came out from the reporters that did the undercover op.
