From the -Slate- article:
The current German O104 situation is surely awful and tragic, but it has introduced no novel threat. It has grimly served to remind us of the frailty of life and the wonders of good plumbing. More than anything else, the science behind E. coli emphatically points out something far more horrifying than any one outbreak: Nature doesn't like us. It doesn't hate us, but it doesn't like us. Rather, it is perfectly and eternally disinterested.
