In addition to winds and storms blowing trees down we also had an earth quake measuring a magnitude 4.4. Not much damage apart from my picture frames getting knocked down the neighbor's dog going bonkers.

The good news is we have record snowfall in Mt Buller so it's excellent skiing conditions.

earthquake and 137 miles per hour wind/snowstorm? geez! I thought we had crazy weather here in the US lately. So is there going to be am alignment of the solar system in 2012??

I didn't know that tetonic plates were affected by severe weather?? Or is it just two unrelated events at the same time??

In the last few years we seem to have an unusual tectonic activity around the pacific rim
Indonesia, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Chile, New Zealand and South Pacific

If I lived in Hawaii or California I would be getting a little nervous.

I am rather nervous about those in Cali because they are overdue for "the big one" some scientists say it could happen any time soon. I remember the big earthquake they had in the late 80's....I was only 12 and had not seen so much suffering before, although, I only saw it on tv...it deeply effected me.

According to geologists the western half of the Californian peninsula up to Baha is moving away from the mainland toward the Pacific. With the current activity across the Pacific rim it must certainly be on the cards the area from San Francisco down to San Diego would be in danger.

I was in Nevada in 1980 with my parents and experienced an earthquake. We were staying in the Marriot hotel and our beds were moving around. What I never forget is looking at the hotel pool and seeing the swirling water moving like water going down a sink drain. It was really quite weird.

the swiriling poolwater imagery gives me the hebee jebees
Did the earth open up under the pool??

Ya my sister said that half of cali is going to fall into the ocean someday....which it may be the next alantis if the big one hits. My friend at work used to call california during the wildfires and earthquakes, "the land of the shakin' bacon"

That's right, in addition to the coastal earthquake damage an undersea earthquake off the coast would send a tsunami wave across the coast which would probably deluge California as far inland as Bakersfield.

The swirling pool? no there was no cracks or anything, I think the land was titling and swaying so caused the pool to mix. To be honest I ma not sure how it occurred, just remembering how weird it looked.

As I understand it the plate that contains California is sliding to the north ... toward Alaska. So it's not going to "fall into the ocean". But eventually Los Angeles will be a suburb of Anchorage.

Sorry your right, it's north not east as I suggested. I guess that means the pacific plate is moving north?

The storms are mainly affecting Victoria and New South Wales. You could try posting this on the Australian WP thread to find out if anyone here on WP has been affected.
