Not exactly a 'current' event but highly educational I think it a historical frame of reference. Apparently this was common practice in North Carolina between 1929 and 1974:

My mother was born in 1923 in a small town in the Blue Ridge mountains. She said she can remember busloads of people being brought down for sterilization.

i've read this crap was going on until the 80's even.
