Daily Express: The end of cheap flights

From the Express on Sunday (http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/277 ... ap-flights)
Quote:
CASH-STRAPPED British families and businesses are set to make up to 8.6 million fewer flights next year as punishing air taxes make fares unaffordable.
Research unveiled today shows most airlines believe the number of passengers will drop by up to five per cent in 2012 due to higher air passenger duty.
More than a quarter of airlines think the impact of a rise in the tax, on top of the added cost of a European green scheme, will be even greater, pricing more families out of flying.

This has been in the offing for quite some time now. The combination of both punishing EU taxes and home-grown 'green' nonsense has resulted in going abroad for holidays increasingly unaffordable for many people.
Ten years ago, one could easily afford to jet around Europe and the Middle East. Now it's very expensive - both the flights (with the onerous EU 'green', homegrown and APD/ADF charges) but also the hotel accommodation and the punishing day-today costs of tourism when one actually gets there. The costs of holidaying at your destination of choice is often more expensive than doing the same things at home.
Can we leave yet?
yeah I dunno, on the other hand you got the likes of Ryanair introducing those weird standing-seats for ridiculous fares.
I live in one of the cheap flights destinations at the moment and I would actually love to see tourism become more of an elite activity again as I'm fed up with the binge-drinking lowlifes who can't afford the local taxi fare but still manage to get their asses here with the cheap flights
