This page is only one of many equally offensive pages which Facebook deems acceptable, reflecting its complete disregard for the seriousness of rape and how it affects not just the women and men who have suffered, but also their friends and families.

Anyone who'd be pissed off at the notion that rape jokes are disgusting (they are) could use a reality check.

Of course they're disgusting. That's why people tell them.

Telling. I wonder if jokes about assaulting Jews or black people would be met with such apathy.

I would imagine the majority of men are just as outraged as you are.
Some people just use extreme tactics to get attention.

People tell those as well. And anti-disability, anti-autism, anti-whatever jokes. I'm not in the business of stopping them either.

Good for you for being consistent in your views.

However, my question was posed in reference to how those types of jokes might be treated differently in mainstream society, culture, and media.

If they where jokes about killing atheists, then the mainstream would in fact jump all over it but notice they do not about rape jokes in the mainstream media.

And yeah it's just a attempt to get people like me upset my girlfriend was a victim of rape so this just makes me mad :x

You know, I'm really not too sure about this. Rape jokes are far less tolerated now than they were in the past as society has changed its attitude towards it. In films 25 or 30 years ago - especially from the Far East - you'd come across rape jokes quite often. Now they've disappeared.

You try to play down their effect and exposure whilst talking on a thread about them on facebook.

Makes me sick that this is still up; nothing could be less funny to me than making light of rape.

statistics show that 1 out of every 5 women have been sexually abused in the US, ( not including sexual harrasment) during their lifetimes, that is documented cases, but with the high amount of sexual abuse that goes unreported due to fear or feeling ashamed or the pointlessness of reporting it, it is estimated that 1 out of every 2 women in the US have been sexually abused in their lifetimes. THAT IS EVERY OTHER WOMAN that has been victimized sexually.
I have been sexually abused from the time I was 8 till my twenties several times.
This is not including sexual harrasment....which I usually just ignore.

The reason this is not an issue with facebook is because rape is the unspoken norm for women in the US.
Women can vote, hold an elected office, be a CEO, but still not have the final as to what is done with her body, whether it be the politics of abortion or who enters her body against her will.
Either way, the result is the same....women are not granted cultural lordship over their bodies.
Not trying to start a battle over abortion, just pointing out the corelation.
