It's still under investigation but it has been reported that a police officer and one other person was killed.

Sounds like deja vu to me.

This is so sad. Either something needs to change at Virginia Tech, or it's just really unfortunate.

Two are confirmed dead. My family has a long history at Va Tech. My mother is from Blacksburg and my grandfather was a professor there many many years ago. Two brothers and two nephews went to school there. One nephew was a student there in April 2007 and one of the victims was a friend of his. There's one thing to know about Va Tech and Blacksburg. The university is literally bigger than the town. Just saying it's not some kind of urban nightmare. I lived there for a year when I was 17 and I could walk up to any random old lady and she would have known my grandmother, who taught 1st grade to generations. I don't know why Blacksburg has been beset with such violence. It's a pretty, tiny little town set in the mountains.

It now looks as if the shooter is one of the dead.

Yes, it look that way. at first I thought the person who was stopped for the traffic violation was the shooter but it appears as if the shooter was some random guy who had a sudden impulse to kill someone.

It says here that the shooter killed himself after trying to change clothes in a university greenhouse. It said in previous articles that there was another body found with a gun nearby, although he was wearing different clothes than the shooter previously described. I think they're claiming it was the shooter that was found dead nearby now that they know that he switched clothes. I was a little confused at first when news articles said there were two victims to start out with while the shooter was still at large, but now it makes sense that the shooter was one of the victims. Anyways, here's a recent article about the issue:

I see their lobbying to prevent weapons on campus paid off well...

They identified the shooter as Ross Truette Ashley, who was a college student that lived nearby. Sounds like a fairly aloof guy from the article/interviews of other people:

Was he on any psychiatric medicine like the rest of them?

Actually anti-depressants have a warning that it may increase homicidal or suicidal thoughts.

Columbine shooting. Kids were on anti-depressants. Ever tried those drugs? While it may work for some, others get hostile, angry, think about either killing themselves or killing others. The media blamed Marilyn Manson on why the kids shot others to use as the scapegoat. The real culprit may have actually been the anti-depressants. Why bother teaching children "Don't do drugs" if society hypocritically endorses these harmful drugs on kids?





A growing number of school shootings and other shooting rampages were committed by individuals under the influence of, or in withdrawal from, psychiatric drugs known to cause mania, psychosis, violence and even homicide. Consider this list of 13 massacres over the past decade or so, resulting in 54 dead and 105 wounded – and these are just the ones where the psychiatric drugs are known. In other cases, medical records were sealed or autopsy reports not made public or, in some cases, toxicology tests were either not done to test for psychiatric drugs or not disclosed to the public. But this is what we do know about the mental health “treatment” of those who committed these acts of violence:

Dekalb, Illinois – February 14, 2008: 27-year-old Steven Kazmierczak shot and killed five people and wounded 16 others before killing himself in a Northern Illinois University auditorium. According to his girlfriend, he had recently been taking Prozac, Xanax and Ambien. Toxicology results showed that he still had trace amount of Xanax in his system.
Omaha, Nebraska – December 5, 2007: 19-year-old Robert Hawkins killed eight people and wounded five before committing suicide in an Omaha mall. Hawkins’ friend told CNN that the gunman was on antidepressants, and autopsy results confirmed he was under the influence of the “anti-anxiety” drug Valium.
Jokela, Finland – November 7, 2007: 18-year-old Finnish gunman Pekka-Eric Auvinen had been taking antidepressants before he killed eight people and wounded a dozen more at Jokela High School in southern Finland, then committed suicide.
Cleveland, Ohio – October 10, 2007: 14-year-old Asa Coon stormed through his school with a gun in each hand, shooting and wounding four before taking his own life. Court records show Coon had been placed on the antidepressant Trazodone.
Blacksburg, Virginia – April 16, 2007: 23-year-old Seung Hui Cho shot to death 32 students and faculty of Virginia Tech, wounding 17 more, and then killing himself. He had received prior mental health treatment, however his mental health records remained sealed.
Red Lake, Minnesota – March 2005: 16-year-old Jeff Weise, on Prozac, shot and killed his grandparents, then went to his school on the Red Lake Indian Reservation where he shot dead 7 students and a teacher, and wounded 7 before killing himself.
Greenbush, New York – February 2004: 16-year-old Jon Romano strolled into his high school in east Greenbush and opened fire with a shotgun. Special education teacher Michael Bennett was hit in the leg. Romano had been taking “medication for depression”.
El Cajon, California – March 22, 2001: 18-year-old Jason Hoffman, on the antidepressants Celexa and Effexor, opened fire on his classmates, wounding three students and two teachers at Granite Hills High School.
Williamsport, Pennsylvania – March 7, 2001: 14-year-old Elizabeth Bush was taking the antidepressant Prozac when she shot at fellow students, wounding one.
Conyers, Georgia – May 20, 1999: 15-year-old T.J. Solomon was being treated with antidepressants when he opened fire on and wounded six of his classmates.
Columbine, Colorado – April 20, 1999: 18-year-old Eric Harris and his accomplice, Dylan Klebold, killed 12 students and a teacher and wounded 26 others before killing themselves. Harris was on the antidepressant Luvox. Klebold’s medical records remain sealed.
Notus, Idaho – April 16, 1999: 15-year-old Shawn Cooper fired two shotgun rounds in his school, narrowly missing students. He was taking a prescribed SSRI antidepressant and Ritalin.
Springfield, Oregon – May 21, 1998: 15-year-old Kip Kinkel murdered his parents and then proceeded to school where he opened fire on students in the cafeteria, killing two and wounding 22. Kinkel had been taking the antidepressant Prozac.

Psychiatry has a history of psychopathic behaviors in regards to others and being morally bankrupt. Remember the times of lobotomies? Drugs aren't cures nor are they really good therapies. If one drug doesn't work, they put you on more and more and more. If you end up having a seizure or getting violent, expect more! Notice there is no real problem solving abilities being used but instead drugging? Those kids were being bullied. Those anti-depressants were giving them homicidal thoughts and probably all sort of grandiose ideas. These drugs are really adverse towards the youth as they are not mature.

Why push these pills on people with all the potential complications? Because people think "Oh it won't happen to me or my child!" That is rather naive.

Is this just a coincidence?

increasingly angry leading up to massacre

As all of you would have expected . . . it would not be long before we found out what the shooter was taking. And it has just been released by the media that he was taking antidepressants and having serious reactions to them that we are used to seeing like starting a fire in his dorm, a long rambling letter describing grievances - a particular dislike for the rich.

We already had several clues of antidepressant-induced automatic behaviors such as REM Sleep Disorder: the time of day being early morning for this incident and the calm demeanor of the shooter. We also have the antidepressant-induced manic behaviors: fire starting, violent and aberrant behavior & rambling letters of complaints.

If toxicology shows that only Xanax was in his system, that means he went off his meds before the shooting. Xanax would do the opposite of drive someone to go on a shooting spree, and even then there wasn't much left in his system.

Valium would have the opposite effect of driving someone to go on a shooting spree- especially at high levels. I am a little familiar with this case, and the shooter had a history of unstable behavior. His gun was stolen.

Jokela, Finland – November 7, 2007: 18-year-old Finnish gunman Pekka-Eric Auvinen had been taking antidepressants before he killed eight people and wounded a dozen more at Jokela High School in southern Finland, then committed suicide.

No details about the exact meds he was on or what was going on in his life are readily available. No conclusions can reasonably be made.

Trazodone is in the SSRI class, but is a sleep med and has little use as an antidepressant.

Cho had a history of unstable behavior both before and after he received mental health treatment.

Red Lake, Minnesota – March 2005: 16-year-old Jeff Weise, on Prozac, shot and killed his grandparents, then went to his school on the Red Lake Indian Reservation where he shot dead 7 students and a teacher, and wounded 7 before killing himself.

Prozac works rather poorly in a lot of people- especially in males and especially if it's a generic formulation. I've taken this med before and It was like being given a placebo. It is a likely that the prozac was working so poorly that it was as if the shooter was untreated.

Greenbush, New York – February 2004: 16-year-old Jon Romano strolled into his high school in east Greenbush and opened fire with a shotgun. Special education teacher Michael Bennett was hit in the leg. Romano had been taking “medication for depression”.

There is no data on the exact meds he was taking. Being that his target was his special ed teacher, there was likely other psychological issues documented in prior IEP's.

El Cajon, California – March 22, 2001: 18-year-old Jason Hoffman, on the antidepressants Celexa and Effexor, opened fire on his classmates, wounding three students and two teachers at Granite Hills High School.

Celexa and Effexor is an odd combination, but both are known to be very hit and miss in their effectiveness for different people. It is possible in this case that the meds had some COTRIBUTING role since the COMBINATION of the 2 would have a tendency to cause extreme anxiety. Any factor the meds may have played can be attributed to doctor error rather than the meds themself.

Williamsport, Pennsylvania – March 7, 2001: 14-year-old Elizabeth Bush was taking the antidepressant Prozac when she shot at fellow students, wounding one.

As stated above, prozac can be very weak. It is not the major butt-kicker of the antidepressant class that some uninformed people think it is.

Conyers, Georgia – May 20, 1999: 15-year-old T.J. Solomon was being treated with antidepressants when he opened fire on and wounded six of his classmates.

The name(s) of the exact drugs is not available. No conclusion can be made.

Columbine, Colorado – April 20, 1999: 18-year-old Eric Harris and his accomplice, Dylan Klebold, killed 12 students and a teacher and wounded 26 others before killing themselves. Harris was on the antidepressant Luvox. Klebold’s medical records remain sealed.

Luvox is not even a SSRI or SNRI. It is more commonly used for OCD than depression.

There are a few patterns I've noticed:
1) Most of the people there is information for shows that they are using a monotherapy with a med that is commonly prescribed as a first attempt by a general practitioner to treat depression and not a psychiatrist.

2) The meds were likely either too weak or just plain ineffective, and it is likely that some of them were not taking meds as prescribed at the time of the shootings.

3) Narcissistic and antisocial personality disorders are a known predisposing factor for violent behavior.

4) There is very little (if any) information about what was going on in the shooters' lives or in the shooters' heads prior to the shootings or even prior to receiving treatment (for those that are applicable).

5) Very little background information about any of the shooters has ever surfaced that might show if there was any history of disturbing behavior in the past.

6) The list of shooters on meds was cherry picked. I know there have been more incidents in that same timespan, but I can't think of the names of them off the top of my head.

Yes, some were withdrawing.
As far as the Columbine shooter, he wrote of being suicidal but it ended up being a murder/suicide.
