Looks like the Bradley Manning hearing has halted because the defense thought the prosecuting side was biased. It seems pretty valid to me, as the defense was only allowed 12 of 38 requested witnesses, while the prosecuting side was allowed all of their witnesses. The government is even going to call on President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to testify about the supposed damage that's been done. This doesn't sound like real justice to me and I hope that they do the right things (wishful thinking, but I guess you never know what could happen...).

Aspiegirl, I can't help but get the impression that you're a Frankfurt School alum, and hence don't think American society and its institutions have any right to exist--that they are the embodiment of evil. Is my assessment correct?

Oh come on Dunnyveg. You make a blind accusations and then ask her whether that's true. Take it elsewhere

I'd suggest you brush up on the difference between a question and accusation. Besides, I wasn't talking to you. I'll also remind you that this is a site for those on the ASD; you're not by your own admission. You are welcome, but you really need to mind your manners.

don't patronize me. I have as much right to criticize you as anyone. You can't just brush it off by accusing me of having bad manners.

Yeah, nice try. Let's take a look att your 'question'

Now let's take away the end part.

Oh, look. A completely transparent accusation. Don't blatantly accuse someone of being biased on some frankly heinous allegations and then attempt to hide it by tagging some generic tag question.

If you really believe your manners are acceptable, I apologize. You do need to be here.

I notice that my question draws howls of protest from you but no answer, even indirectly. Unless your friend cares to respond, I rest my case.

Have a nice day.

Your assessment is extremely incorrect. I never even heard of or applied to Frankfurt School. Second, as an American citizen, I believe that everyone has the right to defend themselves in court, even if I don't agree with their actions or what they have to say in the first place. I don't fully agree with what Bradley Manning did, but from what I've been reading it sounds like the prosecutors are trying to slant the story in their own favor by refusing to hear most of the defense's witnesses. It is because I believe in American institutions' right to exist that I'm angry at this. At its heart, I believe it's un-American for a court to favor one side over the other before a case has even begun. No matter who's side anyone is on, people should be angry at this kind of injustice. And thirdly, WP is open to anyone, whether they 'need' it or not, and EVERYONE should be polite, which includes not making ad hominem remarks against fellow WP members.

Aspiegirl, you don't "fully" agree with what Manning did? By the way "did" is correct. The evidence against Manning is overwhelming. Let me put it this way to you: would you object had Manning been employed as an administrative clerk in your psychology clinic and released thousands of confidential patient records to the Internet? What would the APA say about that? Would you be defending his actions? How about if Manning weren't homosexual?

I proudly served in navy intelligence, and currently work with an official US Army intel group (unclassified) as an expert on culture and the left. Just for your information, I don't agree with much of what the army has been called upon to do, but our entire military is apolitical. It is there to carry out the instructions of our elected civilian political leaders. If you, like me, have a problem with policy, you need to take it out on the politicians instead of the military there to protect us all. Yes, our military has been misused. I'm arguing that we shouldn't throw the baby out with the bath water. And compromising the nation's secrets is doing just that.

As far as the Frankfurt School goes, they are something you really should be aware of, and I would strongly encourage you to do some research on them. They were psychologists themselves. They started a movement called Cultural Marxism, or what some call Political Correctness. In an exquisite irony, Cicero--the real one--summed it up quite well:

"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague."

Just as the real Cicero describes, PC has taken a "long march through the institutions" and made our moral and social norms poisonous to the continued survival of the entire West. We are destroying ourselves from within.

How? Primarily through psychological and sociological means. With the Marxist and fascist lefts, they coerced their policies through politics and blunt force; their way required legions of secret police. The modern left has co-opted our morals and social norms; normal people police themselves. Just as "pseudo-Cicero" clearly demonstrated last night, the modern left doesn't argue the merits of their viewpoints. The modern left condemns even the slightest deviationism as moral defectiveness and a sign of mental illness. "Pseudo-Cicero wasn't trying to show me the error of my ways; he was trying to shut down the debate before it ever began by chasing me from this forum and arguing about nattering irrelevancies.

I agree with you that Manning should have a fair trial, but the way Tim McVeigh had a fair trial. That is indeed the American way.

Some good news: The reason I have been honored to participate with Army intelligence isn't because I'm the most knowledgeable person around on culture and the left, but because my AS forces me to see society for what it is--devoid of the cant and hypocrisy of modern social norms. In this context, my inability to deal well with society becomes my greatest strength. Nietzsche put it best: "Be careful lest in casting out demons that you don't cast out the very best thing that's in you."

What I'm getting at is that while your post on Manning made me queasy, I'm NOT condemning you. In fact, I implore you to use your AS to see things for what they are. We aspies should be the canaries in the coal mine, and the miners are in trouble.

I wish you the best.

@Dunnyveg you should have said "unelected civilian political leaders"
Your president doesn't even control the armed forces, and the last one handed that off to the VP.

Since throwing the word treason around is the cool thing to do, i'll suggest we prosecute everyone who voted for the patriot act as a start.
What the current administration has done is replaced the prosecution of treason with the prosecution of exposing treason. IIRC there's been more whistle-blowers prosecuted than government contractors. Honestly, I don't give two s**ts about the warcrimes that got uploaded to the shared drives back in 2003-05 when no one cared what got uploaded, but that stuff wasn't on the siprnet and no one would even think about leaking it out to the media. AFAIK Manning is the first enlisted guy out of what, 3 million? to actually upload something to wikileaks, so of course they have to make an example of him. I wouldn't like to see him executed but i know a lot of people who would.
BTW, i'm really interested to see how they pin the embassy cables on him.
I don't recall who it was, but there was a reporter working for the nyt or something came up with a neat little software package to scan that material. He ended up discovering what a 9-line report was! I thought it was pretty funny, and sad too at the same time, that they couldn't find anyone that knew how to read that stuff to help them make sense of it.

TL;DR
you have so much faith in your country you can't see the Coup d'etat staring you in the face.
