Back in September I posted an article about a severely neglected dog which had been abandoned at Wood Green animal shelter where I work. The couple have been traced and taken to court. Article here:

Finally there has been justice for Floyd who had to be put to sleep because his health problems were too severe.

Wow this is soo horrible . His eyes appeared to bear some horrible pains. I really hope they go to prison for a good length of time. It's extremely bizarre. As far as the dog, I'm really surprised that they couldn't find a good home for him in the UK. It was apparent he was able to walk around and I would think they could've nursed him back to health. Shame on the UK spca as well for giving up on him!

I'm sorry to hear about this. I will not read the article, not because I don't care, but because animal cruelty cases affect me too much. How anyone can mistreat a defenceless creature is beyond all my reasoning.

That's sick and terrible! I hope the abusers go to prison for at least 5 years.

We have RSPCA in UK (don't forget everything is 'royal' here!) but it wasn't them who took this dog in. It was an independent charity called Wood Green who never put a healthy dog down. This article doesn't really go into what Wood Green did before putting him down, but they tried their hardest to treat his illnesses. They also weren't aware that he was only five and thought he was much older and therefore less likely to tolerate repeated operations. I met Floyd on a few occasions while I was at work and I could see the poor thing was in a lot of pain. He could hardly walk and was eventually diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia alongside the ear, eye and skin infections, severe dental problems and a large tumour in his mouth. After three weeks of seeing no improvements in his health, it was decided that it would be too traumatic for him to undergo further treatment as he was already very distressed, so they put him to sleep. The following week, most of the staff were crying about it.

Wood Green's policy is strict. They NEVER put a healthy dog down (unless it is covered by dangerous dogs act which means by law, they have to) and they will always try to rehabilitate any animal before coming to this tough decision. They are also very strict that no animal will EVER be put down to make space. I know this for a fact because we have hundreds of rabbits and there are two who have been there for over a year!

I have to say I was one of the staff who cried when I heard he had been put to sleep. It was the day after my own pet rabbit had to be put to sleep and that just made it so much harder. I think (but don't quote me on this) they got a 2 year suspended prison sentence (not enough IMO), community service and a life-time ban on keeping any animal. This has only been reported on our local news and doesn't seem to have gone online yet but when it does I'll link it.

Personally I still don't think he should've been "put down". I think pain and anxiety medicine might've been the first step and then treating him for his conditions. Nevertheless, it is a horrific example of what neglect can do to an animal (or human) for that matter. Which makes it all the more sickening that he suffered that way due to the selfishness and lack of love alone on behalf of his more capable owners.

Edit:

If the dog was in that much pain and there was nothing that could be done and he could barely walk and he had that tumour in his mouth, than maybe putting him down was the best thing to do. I'm very sensitive and I don't like the idea of assisted suicide and euthanasia for any living creature, human or not but if that dog was in that much pain, than they did the right thing.

That just made me cringed. I can't believe a couple would do that to their animal. Too embarrassed to take their dog to the vet? Boo hoo, they still should have sucked it up and do it. Couldn't afford the groom care anymore? They should have given him away to someone who could afford his care. Screw the commitment about keeping an animal for life. If you can no longer afford to care for them, then you need to get rid of them so they can get the care they need by someone who can afford it. Not all pet owners want to get rid of their pets but they have to because it's for their best than having them be neglected because they can no longer afford their health care or to keep them fed or keep them groomed.

That dog looked in good shape after being freed from his own fur but I wouldn't even guess he had very bad health problems based on the pictures.

I think this article is a message to all the crazy animal lovers out there about being critical about people getting rid of their pets. Would they rather have something like this happen to a innocent animal because of the commitment about keeping a pet for life once you get it? But no they may say they should never have a pet in the first place. Uh oh then no one should ever have a pet because anything could go wrong that would make you unable to keep the pet.

Dear Jellybean, Thank you for letting us know what happened to Floyd, heartbreaking as this is. He deserved better.

I remember reading this story the last time it was posted here.
Too bad things didn't turn out better for him.
Yes, the way he was neglected is a crime. :x

Aww, this is just outright sad! I used to raise great danes for 4-H. I may not have dogs now, but I still love them. I'm not a member of PETA, but there's just no excuse for this.
