Five charged after Chinese teen sells kidney to buy iPhone

(Reuters) - Five people in southern China have been charged with intentional injury in the case of a Chinese teenager who sold a kidney so he could buy an iPhone and an iPad, the government-run Xinhua News Agency said on Friday.

The five included a surgeon who removed a kidney from a 17-year-old boy in April last year. The boy, identified only by his surname Wang, now suffers from renal deficiency, Xinhua quoted prosecutors in Chenzhou city, Hunan province as saying.....

See comment in thread titled "Uh-Oh, Spaghetti-O" about an entire culture and way of life being at fault.

Consumerism has its place-- all things consume to survive-- but it's gone way, way, way too far. There is something ugly in human nature that makes developing nations desperate to emulate the West, even though they have had 200+ years to look at the fruits of that tree.

Are we so short-sighted??

I think I'd almost rather lose a kidney than my beloved iPhone.

Oh how I hate these iPhones or so-called smart phones or whatever nonsense they call the latest handheld pieces of junk teenagers can't live without! :evil: I have reason to believe the signals and radiation coming from those things are screwing up people's minds and giving them brain tumors. I have a cell phone, but it's not really mine, my dad loaned it to me and I only use it when I need to call for a ride when I'm out somewhere and there are no pay-phones.

Lets say you are correct about brain tumors- That is why there is texting

I don't understand all this cellphone/smartphone crap.

I wouldn't even have a phone, if my parents hadn't just given my one for emergencies.

And I hate texting. For years I refused to text, and I still hate doing it.
