It's good for them because driving as a teenager is overrated. It's better not to drive so much until maturity. Not as many wrecks that way.

Cars are too expensive due to the costs of maintenance, gas, loan payments, tires, and insurance. It is much easier to use public transportation or use zipcar or a timeshare car.

Not to mention that I think it is more environmentally friendly to use public transportation. The oil companies have been too greedy for too long. They have now permanently changed American, consumerism habits. They give this generation more and more of a reason to look for alternatives all together (keep the gas prices rising. Soon you'll price yourself out of business forever!)

I won't be buying a car until I absolutely need it or I have money flowing out of the bank.

I do not drive because it would be a economic burden. Plus gas is to high and cars cost too much.

If they live in an area where a car is not required, there isn't a reason to get a car. Some in the article that are getting older and still have their parents chauffeur them are going to be in for a rude awakening.

Some of them might not like the idea of paying for a car. Or the economic burden of owning one their is a lot more to it then that.

Cars are required in some places since there isn't viable public transit (it would be cost prohibitive to implement it in areas with a low or medium population density). It is a problem when you don't live in a population center.

It's because they'll just leech off friends that drive.

I'm generation X not Y but I don't drive either. My mother never did and my grandmother never did. I get around walking, on buses, and sometimes cabs.

I don't like cars at all and I've done my best to avoid getting a car. I stayed in Bristol after university because it had very good public transport but even there I struggled to find descent work without a car. So last year I gave in and started to learn to drive but I had to stop because my instructor got sick. I'm going to try again when I get a job

Yes it is very hard to afford a car, insurance and gas. I have a friend who isn't getting insurance until he is 25 because that's when insurance starts to get cheaper. Plus if you live in a city with a transit system, you don't really have to drive, and it's cheaper.

Also, I know many people come out of university with student debt, or have trouble finding work in their field. So I'm sure we're also a pretty broke generation...

Yeah. I know plenty of people who don't drive. They've all got a bunch of rational reasons why owning a car isn't worth the money. But their first choice, whenever they need to go more than a few blocks, is always to ask me for a ride. And the concept of pitching in for gas is completely foreign to them.

One thing I think that's good is that the less people texting while driving, the safer the rest of us are. Personally, I fit in with Generation X, plus I live where driving is a necessity because the public transportation system doesn't go everywhere yet.

People who text while driving should have their thumbs removed by surgery.
