American author Gore Vidal has passed on from a bout of pneumonia. One genuine class act, great writer of fiction and non-fiction, and an early champion of gay rights now belongs to the ages.

I always found him overly smug and pretentious, like he was more concerned about appearing brilliant than allowing his writing to speak for itself.

I never met a humble writer that was successful. I'm sure there are, but I think publishing ones thoughts, I'd have to feel pretty sure of myself too.

Sucks to die of pneumonia of all things, it must have hurt like hell.

I didn't know he wrote fiction. Now I'm curious. <.<

I've had pneumonia a couple times, and it sucked. Lungs full of phlegm so you can't breathe - hated it.

The greatest critic of the USA!
It's a shame that he is virtually unknown in his own country
It will take a hundred years before the depth of his insight is absorbed into the cultural soul of the U.S.
...probably less in other countries.

That's 100% true - just a few books by him are translated in here; I read only his Live from Golgotha and I liked it very much; one of my most favorite books.

on "firing line" gore called buckley a "crypto nazi" which made buckley flush red and call gore a "goddamned fa***t" and then threaten him with physical violence, using language to the effect of "...and when i punch somebody they stay punched!"
