Totally worth it:

Quote:
Police: Farmer unhappy about arrest drives tractor over 7 sheriff's vehicles

A farmer who was arrested last month expressed his displeasure Thursday afternoon in Newport by driving a heavy tractor over seven police vehicles owned by the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department, authorities said.

State police estimated the damage at about $250,000. No one was hurt.

Roger Pion, 34, was jailed for lack of $15,000 bail at the Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport to await arraignment Friday morning on 11 charges.

Pion is facing seven counts of felony unlawful mischief and one misdemeanor count of unlawful mischief on suspicion of damaging the cars, State Police Detective Trooper Lyle Decker said.

Decker said Pion also is facing charges of leaving the scene of an accident, grossly negligent operation and aggravated assault on Newport City police on allegations of trying to back the tractor into a city cruiser after fleeing the original scene.

“It’s more than half our fleet. We have 11 cars,” Chief Deputy Sheriff Phil Brooks told the Burlington Free Press. He said the cruisers were in three rows.

He said all the vehicles were insured. Brooks estimated that the cruisers averaged about $40,000 fully equipped. He said at least one cruiser had a laptop in it. Other equipment, such as radar, were in the vehicles when the tractor ran them over.

“It’s pretty much the biggest tractor you can get,” Newport City Police Chief Seth DiSanto said.

“It was a massive tractor. It has four 6-foot tandem wheels on the back. It was red. It must be at least a 15-ton tractor,” Newport Express Publisher Ken Wells said shortly after the incident. The tractor had slightly smaller tandem tires on the front.

The tractor was owned by the suspect’s parents, Armand and Linda Pion of Newport, police said.

Brooks said five of the damaged vehicles were fully marked red, white and black cruisers, and two were unmarked, including a transport van. He said an eighth car, belonging to the department bookkeeper, was pushed out of the way by the tractor in an effort to get at the cruisers. It had minor damage.

The farmer is an idiot... The police cars he destroyed were not even part of the department that arrested him. I read the details somewhere, but I forget what he was originally arrested for.

Well, whatever the merits of his grievance may have been regarding the original arrest... he's now lost any argument he may have been trying to make. Idiot

i saw that on the local news.in that very rural area the police are under funded already and now there going use police cars from other departments that patrol very rural areas.so this leaves large parts of rural vermont with no law enforcement for a period of time.

this idiot did not hurt the police he only hurt people who live in areas where emergency response units are few and far between as is.
if someone in remote orleans or essex county is a victim of crime or even in a car accident it could not take 45 minutes for police to get to these ares, maybe even longer then 45 minutes

Exactly. Insurance companies take the first hit. They raise their premiums. Police budget needs to go up. People pay more taxes or face a reduction in other services.

So the farmer took money out of the local's pockets and the police just shrug and go eat another doughnut.

This thread should really be titled "f**k the Taxpayer"

It isn't totally worth it. That guy is an idiot and a jerk. Instead of taking grievances to the proper authority, getting a lawyer, or raising awareness; he destroys property that the taxpayers pay for.

Everyone hates the police until they need protection.

One thing I've always found to be extremely stupid is when people are so pissed about getting arrested for a minor crime that they go out and commit some kind of major crime in protest or as revenge (I could give examples). Do they not realize they'll be in even more trouble?

I could maybe understand it if the police falsely arrested him and humiliated him and beat the crap out of him but didn't they just arrest him for something he actually did?

The police were spending public funds enforcing marijuana prohibition, ergo the taxpayers were already being f*cked, and to the tune of a whole lot more than a few crushed cruisers. The police are supposed to protect and serve, but too often they now steal and power-trip, extort the taxpayers at the ballot box and at the negotiating table, and occasionally kill us with the flimsiest of rationales with zero accountability. So, though I have nothing in particular against this particular department or it's officers, it makes me smile to see someone fight back, if only in a crudely symbolic way for which he'll be duly punished. Somewhere, I'm sure Eazy E is smiling.

The police don't so much protect as they do punish criminals after the fact, which may have some deterring effect on potential crime, but not enough to call what they do "protecting". They're also not legally bound to protect you, by Supreme Court precedent no less. Personally, I never call them. Ever.

Well to my mind the farmer with the tractor was what we call in the UK a yob.

I know that some police officers abuse members of the public but squashing police cars with a tractor is not the way to deal with some wrongdoing of the police. What if there had been someone inside one of the cars when he went on his car squashing rampage ?

in vermont emergency help is few and far between and especialy orleans county which borders canada.if someone dies because first responders lack equipment he should get charged with manslaughter.i dont much like cops but in orleans or essex county vermont you dont tie up or hinder law enforcement.a trooper 45 minutes away could be someones only hope to live.now the sitiuation in northeast vermont is even worse
