Fowl play in salmonella pizzas

The law can protect us from all sorts of things – not least chicken pizzas infected with salmonella.

Following investigations by the Department of Human Resources, a Melbourne restaurant has agreed to compensate diners who became ill after eating salmonella infected pizza. Law firm Slater and Gordon launched a class action on behalf of 46 victims, including newlyweds who had to cancel their honeymoon after becoming infected, and a woman who was so ill her appendix was removed as a precaution.

Sophia Pizza House in Camberwell was forced to close temporarily after the outbreak between December last year and January this year, the Herald Sun reported. The restaurant’s insurer is expected to have to pay for medical expenses, lost wages, legal costs and pain and suffering. “We’ve had people who were hospitalised for significant periods of time, we’ve unfortunately had children as young as two involved, who suffered the brunt of it and continue to suffer,” a partner at the firm said.

As well, nurse Linda Hunt, 43, suffered severe food poisoning after eating a chicken pizza at Sophia’s in December. She had to spend the next three weeks in bed and made frequent visits to the hospital, the newspaper reported.
