Quote:
Vegans and druids to gain workplace rights under new equality rules
  • Vegetarian or vegan employees with deeply held beliefs should be allowed to exert their rights in the workplace by refusing to clean out office fridges containing meat or dairy products, according to new guidance.
A document published for employers by the Equality and Human Rights Commission suggests that ecologists could ask to be excused from duties that increase CO2 emissions, such as flying to business meetings, and that druids and pagans should be allowed to take time off work to go on pilgrimages and attend sacred rituals.

The guidance, which also applies to Christians, Jews and Muslims and atheists, was produced after a series of judgments by the European Court of Human Rights, including the ruling that Christians can wear a cross at work.

It states that "employees may assert the right to discuss their personal beliefs in the workplace and employers should not prevent such conversations". Bosses should "consider seriously" adapting the relevant work duties to suit their employees beliefs.

So it's another excuse that the awkward and the difficult can use to foster resentment and division and make lives a nuisance for everyone else.

Is it any wonder that many enterprising folk simply don't think it's worth the hassle to set up a business and employ people?

Keep your politics and your religion out of the workplace, please.

Most everyone here has heard enough of the big boss's religion-based political rants to know better than to express their own religious views. We have Atheists, Deists, and Theists, and none of them try to use their religions to claim any undue entitlements on the job - not only would they not receive any, but they would likely be on the receiving end of an long and loud evangelical speech.

The Guidance Documents includes the following:

Quote:
To reach a fully considered, balanced, and reasonable conclusion, an
employer should consider, amongst other factors:

• the cost, disruption and wider impact on business or work if the request is accommodated
• whether there are health and safety implications for the proposed change
• the disadvantage to the affected employee if the request is refused
• the impact of any change on other employees, including on those who have a different religion or belief, or no religion or belief
• the impact of any change on customers or service users, and
• whether work policies and practices to ensure uniformity and consistency are justifiable.

As with accommodations for disability changes that would disrupt the business are not required.

One thing that employers should do (for everybody, not just those with religious convictions) is make clear what the job entails in the job description, including the hours that the employees would be expected to work. Any religious (or disability) issues should be brought up at the time of applying so that they can be assessed by the employer.

Any manager who views this as nuisance or hassle probably shouldn't be in business in the first place.

Employees are the key to any successful business organisation. Keeping employees happy and healthy has a direct bearing on employees' productivity (and loyalty).

Employers who make efforts to accommodate their employees' work-life balance and who create a respectful workplace environment that celebrates diversity are the same employers who become desirable places to work. They attract applicants for every vacancy, and they retain employees for longer periods.

Employers who cannot get their brains around the value that their employees create, and who fail to embrace creative solutions to maximize employee morale and productivity are mired in antiquated ways of thinking that will be increasingly irrelevant in contemporary business.

In the current economic environment most employers have a large number of potential staff to choose from. It is likely that they will not choose a member of staff who needs a lot of adjustments.

Well since cleaning out a refrigerator with meat is hardly the same as being forced to eat it so that one seems a little ridiculous. As for the other one if christians, jews, muslims and athiests can take time off for certain days related to their religion/belief(though not sure what that would really consist of for athiests) then that should apply to druids and pagans as well....Otherwise no one should get days off for such reasons.

If a person never stores food in the company refrigerator, would they be required to clean out someone else's crap?

If someone never drinks coffee, would they be required to contribute to the office coffee fund?

No one is going to grant Druids the right to make human sacrifices at Stonehenge.

No surprises there. Somehow the threat of being merely exposed to something is a breech of human rights. If they don’t use the refrigerator for anything shouldn’t have to clean it out BUT if they are using it for anything including keeping their bottled water there then they should take their turn at cleaning it out.
If you don’t want to clean it then don’t use it.

“Equality and Human Rights Commission” Why does that send a shiver up my back?
Anyhoo, this ecologist thing about flying sounds like a laziness ploy to me: Become an “ecologist” and get out of those pain-in-the-ass business trips. Same for the holiday time for the pagans: Become one and get more paid time off.

Allow people to choose their holidays.Seems fair to me.I have no use for Thankstaking and if I had a job would gladly work in place of someone else so I could celebrate the days that meant something to me.

This makes sense. I don't see why you should get an extra entitlement because of your religion (of any denomination) but if everyone is flexible then there is no reason people can't take time off for what is important to them.

I have worked over Christmas for the last 20 years, because it is not important to me and I don't have family around. I think it's better to let workmates with children and Christian beliefs have this time off as it is meaningful to them, and then I take my holiday at different time. I think some of the rules coming in are starting to get ridiculous, but if we can all be tolerant and a little flexible, that would improve things.

Where I work, you have to clean certain areas even if you never enter the area. The names are on a chart who does what that day.

So why don't we fight for more rights for ourselves (autistic people)?
Freedom/ right to refuse group work

Nah... my point is, I think most of them are absurd.

Also, the "ecologists" here are NOT ecologists, they are "environmentalists".
Ecologists are people who work in the wild, analyzing animal behaviour, or collect samples for analysis in the lab.
Environmentalists are people who have the beliefs of protecting the environment, but are not necessarily Environmental Scientists.
Most environmentalists nowadays are not environmental scientists.

I'm all for protecting the environment, but refusing to fly on a business trip won't reduce emissions; they'll send someone else.

More likely it's only an excuse, albeit a weak one, to get out of a business trip.
