Link: Sylvia Browne's Failed Amanda Berry Prediction Returns To Haunt Her

David Moye wrote:
Celebrity psychic Sylvia Browne is doing damage control over a prediction made nearly 10 years ago claiming Ohio kidnapping victim Amanda Berry was dead, but her actions may represent a watershed moment in how Americans view psychics.

Browne told Louwana Miller, the mother of Amanda Berry, on "The Montel Williams Show" in 2004: "She’s not alive, honey. Your daughter’s not the kind who wouldn’t call," The Atlantic Wire reported. Berry was kidnapped 10 years ago and was found alive on Monday.

One can only hope that this will drive the final nail in the crucifixion of everybody's belief in "psychics" everywhere.

Sadly, I wouldn't hold my breath. Even that link you posted quoted another "psychic" as some sort of "authority." Face it, Truth is out of style. :(

No, people will continue to believe this nonsense. The Believers will say: "Just because one psychic is a fraud doesn't mean they all are."

If talking to the dead was possible we could ask Brutus what Ceasar's last words were and tell Shakespeare whether he was right or not. We could create a perfect eyewitness account of history.
If those astrology hacks we see on tv can predict the future, why don't they just predict the stock market and get rich?

By now just about everyone has heard of cold reading and hot reading, and that still hasn't turned them off this psychic nonsense. I think they should force highschool kids through episodes of Penn&Teller BS! just to show them how much crap is out there. The first episode was about those psychics who let people talk to the dead, like Derek Ogilvy and similar crooks.

Including Relativity and Quantum Electrodynamics on that chart has got to be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen even if they are checked.

They are included for very good reasons:

http://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.p ... c_Argument

What I wanted to point out appears actually in another explanation, and goes like this:

Quote:
A key part of the humour is that a significant number of people believe Einstein's physical theories (particularly Special and General Relativity) to be wrong: its universal promotion in scientific literature is ascribed to a conspiracy. This attitude has been lampooned before in xkcd comic 808 and comic 675.

So besides making fun of people who believe in dousing and psychs and such things, it also pokes fun at conspiracy theorists who don't believe in relativity or quantum theory.

I used to use psychics as counselors/therapists, since Medicare won't pay for the real thing. It was reassuring to hear "everything's gonna be all right" when it looked as if my world would cave in. It took me a while to figure out that they're full of crap, and that they really have no clue. I still can't afford to see a therapist at $200/hr though.

Stop Sylvia Browne is an awesome website. Sylvia is a real weirdo. Since Montel is no longer on the air, she no longer has a platform, which is a good thing.

There'll always be a market for con artists.

That is sort of the point, that all those nonsense things are not checked. Relativity may seem to be a crazy phenomenon, but there are applications for it and loads of evidence. This is contrasted with tarot and such nonsense.

Relativity doesn't seem at all crazy to me.

A psycho ex girlfriend used to be hooked on calling those frauds. She was hardly the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree.

I have to wonder how many police cases have been compromised just for this reason.

What really annoys me is when Dr. Phil has "psychics" and "mediums" on his show. He has a PhD, for crying out loud. He knows perfectly well the techniques that those con artists use to convince people they have some kind of special power. He should be ashamed to promote them.

I'm not sure if they (psychics) are regularly called on? possibly standby and/or last resort on unsolved cases or cold cases or kidnappings (like Amanda Berry) where the victim may be in danger the longer the investigation continues.

So how does John Edward (the medium) get things so right? do the TV networks/Dr Phil work in cahoots with psychics? or is there something else going on?

South park had had a very good episode explaining how he runs his con.
