This is something that I've always suspected, but never had any evidence for.

According to This Article, there are at least 50 so-called "charitable" organizations that pass along 12% of the money they take in to the people that they claim to be helping.

Here are their names, followed by the percentage.

  • Children's Leukemia Research Association: 11.1%
  • Children's Wish Foundation International: 10.8%
  • Veterans Assistance Foundation: 10.5%
  • American Association of State Troopers: 8.6%
  • Firefighters Charitable Foundation: 8.4%
  • National Veterans Service Fund: 7.8%
  • Circle of Friends For American Veterans: 6.5%
  • United Breast Cancer Foundation: 6.3%
  • National Police Defense Foundation: 5.8%
  • Find the Children: 5.7%
  • American Breast Cancer Foundation: 5.3%
  • Children's Cancer Fund of America: 5.3%
  • Wishing Well Foundation USA: 4.6%
  • National Caregiving Foundation: 3.5%
  • Heart Support of America: 3.4%
  • Firefighters Assistance Fund: 3.2%
  • Association for Firefighters and Paramedics: 3.1%
  • Vietnow National Headquarters: 2.9%
  • Kids Wish Network: 2.5%
  • Disabled Police Officers of America Inc.: 2.5%
  • The Veterans Fund: 2.3%
  • Children's Charity Fund: 2.3%
  • Our American Veterans: 2.3%
  • Breast Cancer Relief Foundation: 2.2%
  • Caring for Our Children Foundation: 1.6%
  • Firefighters Burn Fund: 1.5%
  • Shiloh International Ministries: 1.3%
  • National Cancer Coalition: 1.1%
  • Reserve Police Officers Association: 1.1%
  • Optimal Medical Foundation: 1%
  • Disabled Police and Sheriffs Foundation: 1%
  • Cancer Fund of America: 0.9%
  • Youth Development Fund: 0.8%
  • Committee For Missing Children: 0.8%
  • Police Protective Fund: 0.8%
  • American Foundation For Disabled Children: 0.8%
  • Children's Cancer Recovery Foundation: 0.6%
  • United States Deputy Sheriffs' Association: 0.6%
  • International Union of Police Associations, AFL-CIO: 0.5%
  • Hope Cancer Fund: 0.5%
  • Woman To Woman Breast Cancer Foundation: 0.4%
  • Defeat Diabetes Foundation: 0.1%
  • American Association of the Deaf & Blind: 0.1%
  • Disabled Police Officers Counseling Center: 0.1%
There are 6 organizations from the original list that passed along so little of their collected funds, that their actual contribution to the causes they claimed to represent was effectively ZERO!

If you've given to any of these "charities", you may want to reconsider your giving habits.

The Better Business Bureau also lends its accreditation to charities. It could be a good starting point to look into before donating.

There's additional commentary on some at least some of the above 501(c)(3) organizations at the link provided by Fnord.

Some of the behavior discussed...well, I can't say anything without getting into PPR territory.

It is a scandal that they are allowed to operate. By law there should be a minimum percentage that must reach the intended recipients of a charity or they must be forced to close and/or face an investigation for fraud with possible criminal charges following.

Any Charity that has an overhead in excess of ten percent is a scam.

Does anyone think Autism Speaks belongs on the list?

Nasty, nasty organisations on that list. But I suspect that it's a lot bigger than that. And it's not just the U.S. that suffers from this problem, not by a long way.

Then there's the whole business of 'fake charities' too. Charities that take money from government and then lobby it. Some of these organisations would not exist if not for the patronage of the state.

Maybe not as I think they are mostly well-organised as a whole. they marathon their own events and stuff, but
there appears to be lots in England, mostly bible bashing and one of the ones I hate the most are Jehovah's witnesses. I mean who do they think they are banging on doors the weekends. They even bring their kids in case their pathetic clipboards put the overseer off.

For a moment I had hope, Charities for Evil. I am sick of dogooder scams.

I also want one that gives 90% to Evil.

I think that's called a campaign donation.
