Basically-the rulers of North Sudan were staying in power by robbing Peter to pay Paul. Peter being South Sudan ( and its oil fields), and Paul being the populace of the north.

Now that the south has broken away and became a seperate country Khartoum cant bribe its own people with cheap gasoline anymore-hense the riots and arrests.
