Oh, please! It goes back and forth every five years. It was two minutes in 1984, and it was 17 minutes in 1991.

I don't take those things very seriously.

Tim

The clock isn't an exact countdown to our nuclear annihilation, but rather a general indication of how unstable the world is. The only time it ever went to two minutes was in 1953 when the US and the USSR tested thermonuclear weapons within two months of each other. It goes up and down according to world events, peace treaties, wars breaking out, etc. in 1984 it went down because of the escalation of the arms race and instability in the USSR that made it more likely they would start a war just to stave off collapse, which is what happened in 1991 Which along with the START treaty made the world quite a bit more stable. Now with the godawful mess in the middle east and north korea developing nukes the world is quite a bit less stable than it was in 1991.

It's probably another hoax. But it does make me wonder.......when will the world ACTUALLY end?

It doesn't really surprise me that it's been moved upward. The world has been ending for many years now.

They didn't mention either North Korea, or Iran as the probable culprits who'll pull the nuclear trigger. (As Prime Minister Bush says, nunclear.)

I think the Doomsday Clock serves a useful purpose in that it causes people to think about the world's situation a lot more than if no one brought it to our attention.

I'm betting many more folks become active in chaitable, environmental, and philanthropic causes as a result of the annual report on the clock.

It has a kind of a chintzy scare factor to it, but it also is a sort of looming reminder to us that there are issues out there, such as global warming, hunger, and -believe it or not- slavery, and other issues that need to be addressed.

You trying to imitate a more Yiddish version of Einsterin? I know he said "Oy vey" when he heard about Hiroshima, but WTF?
